March 2005
Second Arab Reform Conference

Following the recommendations of the Alexandria Delaration, the Second Arab Reform Conference was held during the period from 13 to 15 March 2005 to present activities of Arab civil societies demonstrating their role and participation in different fields of reform. Upon the recommendation of the First Arab Reform Conference, the Second Arab Reform Conference was to present successful models of Arab civil societies, their efforts in different fields of reform, and the collaboration of these societies with the executive bodies of the their societies. This would spread the “success epidemic” of civil societies activities and their work in every village and city in the Arab world with positive approaches towards reform.

Successful models are evidence on progress that can be achieved by civil societies if they act in appropriate conditions. They can also assist in reforming the society creating unity and coherence among its different classes. Civil societies can help the executive bodies in achieving their goals towards reform and development.

The Conference presented more than 100 significant and effective models of Arab civil societies, from 16 Arab countries, in an effort to demonstrate different methods of success and hidden capabilities in Arab societies. These models have already achieved positive changes in their societies, each benefiting from the individual characteristics in the Arab countries. They all show examples of constructive collaboration among different entities having a common goal: modernization and reform.

The Forum has classified and presented all these models in a publication to be reviewed by the participants in the Second Arab Reform conference and others, identifying success stories that can be used as models. Most models presented are related to important issues such as the environment, social solidarity, sustainable development, culture and arts, political participation, empowering women, human rights, youth employment, education, health and small enterprise funding.

The Conference will hold general sessions in addition to parallel sessions, discussing different issues of reform, as previously indicated.
