Heritage Preservation: Tangible Heritage: The Mosques of the Ottoman Town of Alexandria

In April 2004, Alex Med started an ambitious project to identify, establish the significance of and analyze the Ottoman heritage of Alexandria with the aim of producing "Planning Guidelines" for both the conservation and development of areas that contain a concentration of Ottoman buildings. These objectives take into consideration both the typology of buildings and their integration in the urban fabric.
Phase one is a survey of the mosques of the Ottoman Town of Alexandria. The findings will be published in a book presenting each significant mosque, with basic information, drawings and photographs regarding the historical and/or architectural significance of the mosque. It is hoped that this book will raise awareness of the mosques of the Ottoman Town and contribute to efforts of safeguarding what remains from them.
