Collection
In 1994, the United Nations announced the designation
of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina to be one of the UN publication depository
libraries in Egypt.
Hence, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina holds UN Publication since 1994
to the present in different formats and in three languages, Arabic,
English and French.
Most UN printed publications are classified
by the BA according to DDC and shelved in the main reading hall
level B1, while special formats are available in the Multimedia
Library. Like other BA collections all UN materials (printed and
AV) are searchable through the BA catalog available online.
The collection consits of various types of
publications including reference materials, books, periodicals,
reports, newsletters, videos, CDs and DVDs handbooks, guides, annual
reports, bibliographies and indexes as well as masthead Documents
(working papers for the delegates / meeting records / resolutions
/ agendas mainly materials prepared to serve at UN meetings) of
UN main organs, subsidiary organs and UN specialized agencies.
The collection covers an enormous amount of
international issues, thus providing researchers as well as the
general public with free access to information on a broad scope
of topics related to different aspects of human life worldwide.
The collection subject coverage include the
following topics: Human Rights, Peace Keeping, Poverty, Security,
Education, International Law, Environment, International Relations,
Economic and Social Development as well as other topics of interest
to the UN agencies.
The BA as a UN depository library also receives
General Assembly material and its subsidiary organs including
the three councils (Economic and Social Council, Security Council,
Trusteeship Council and the Secretariat).
The BA is entitled to receive publications from other international
organizations affiliated to the United Nations known as UN specialized
agencies

- UNESCO (=United Nations Education, Scientific
and Culture Organization)
- WHO (=World Health Organization)
- World Bank
- IMF (=International Monetary Found)
- WTO (=World Trade Organization) / GATT
(General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade)
- WIPO (=World Intellectual Property Organization)
- IFAD (=International Fund for Agricultural
Development)

UN publications mentioned above, the Depository Library of the Bibliotheca
Alexandrina also receives publications from other international
agencies like the Red Cross, the Islamic Educational Scientific
and Cultural Organization ISESCO and some publications were received from
the Council of Europe (COE).
