FLL is a result of an impressive alliance between FIRST and the LEGO Company. Guided by adult mentors and their own imaginations, FLL students solve real-world engineering challenges, develop important life skills, and learn to make positive contributions to society. It is an international program for children ages 9-14 years (9-16 years in Europe) that combines a hands-on, interactive
robotics program in a sports-like atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 players with the focus on haracteristics, such as team-building, problem-solving, creativity, and analytical thinking.

Jem Finer’s LONGPLAYER is an attempt to make sense of a span of time. Emanating from one present moment into the unfolding future of the next thousand years, it provides a projection of growth and change. A thousand-year musical composition, it will play continuously and without repetition from 1 January 2000 until its completion on 31 December 2999. |

| Transit of Mercury |
Date: 5/6/2003 |
|
|
The transit of a planet across the Sun is a rare phenomenon. From Earth, only transits of Mercury and Venus are possibly seen. On Wednesday, 7 May 2003, Mercury made the transit across the Sun for the first time since 1999. This event was widely observed from many locations around the world. In the PSC, the library visitors had the chance to observe the transit using the Sun spotter.

| PSC Sundials |
Date: 21/6/2004 |
|
|
The second sundial designed that depends on the latitude of Alexandria is located in the Plaza as well.
Mr. Omar Fikry, the resident astronomer at the Planetarium Science center (PSC), made all the astronomical calculations for the horizontal sundial according to the latitude of the city of Alexandria.
Several sundials are also available in the discovery zone at the ALEXploratorium. |

The sundial was designed by Denis Savois and fabricated locally. It is inspired from the ancient method of measuring time using the shadow of the gnomon on a horizontal base. Visitors stand facing North, on a horizontal base where their shadow indicates the time of the day. The dial is made of a metal indicator that points north, and inclined with the latitude of Alexandria on a horizontal base. The sundial is located in the BA Plaza. |

Date: 8/6/2004 |
|
|
On 8 June 2004, specialized and amateur astronomers around the world detected Venus' drift across the face of the Sun as Venus passed between the Sun and Earth. Special solar telescopes, Sun spotters and projection screens for the observation showed the visitors of the Library all phases of this event. |

The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina won a special prize for the project Exposcience, at the scientific exposition in France held 19-22 July 2004.
Ten children (13-14 year olds) of Saint Vincent Miami school in Alexandria worked on this project for one year. The children compiled a 120-pages book entitled Children Explain Science to Children explaining theories of light, color and optics in a simplified way, using illustrated funny stories.
Congratulations!!!
