| Mahathir Mohamed |

Malaysia's former prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamed, who relinquished his post last year after twenty-two years in power and after transforming his country from an exporter of rubber and tin into an Asian economic tiger, was the guest of the city of Alexandria during the first week of September 2004. While in Alexandria, Mahathir gave two lectures at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on 5 and 6 September. The first lecture focused on human resources development and the Malaysian experience, while the second dealt with interaction between cultures and civilizations. Mahathir concluded his visit by holding a press conference on 7 September at Alexandria University.
