A trial was conducted to evaluate the impact on AIDS care of a mHealth intervention among community-based peer health workers (PHW). PHWs used phones to call and text higher level providers with patient-specific clinical information. Challenges and improvements were analyzed (abstract only).

Benefiting from the increasing mobile phone network, a warmline was established to provide clinical advice to an antiretroviral therapy programme. The warmline was used mostly by field staff and peripherally based peer health workers. Calls addressed important clinical issues and follow-up needs.

The article describes a pilot programme equipping peer health workers (PHW) with mobile phones to monitor patients in a rural antiretroviral therapy programme in Uganda. The aim was to improve communication between PHWs and higher-level providers in a rural setting with poor infrastructure.

A low-cost device extending capabilities of low-tier mobile phones is used to remotely monitor the temperature and location of vaccines in a country-wide “cold-chain”. It sends periodic SMS with routine temperature reports or immediate alerts and enables location-tracking of vaccines in transit.
