An American-led, internationally composed mission to train young Egyptian antiquities inspectors in modern archaeological methods. This ongoing project has, as one of its goals, to practice archaeology as diplomacy and to further Egypt’s ability to protect its fragile ancient heritage.

For more than twenty years, AERA has been exploring the settlement that housed the builders of the Giza pyramids. Dr. Lehner has been working in Egypt for more than thirty years and  is a recognized authority on the Sphinx and the monuments of the Giza Plateau. AERA has developed and implemented the EARA/ARCE Field-Schools.

Project Mission: To train young Egyptian antiquities inspectors in modern archaeological methods. This ongoing project has, as one of its goals, to practice archaeology as diplomacy and to further Egypt’s ability to protect its fragile ancient heritage.
Project Objective(s): To train Egyptian archaeologists in standard practice archaeological methods through a series of Beginners, Advanced, Salvage and Publication field-schools.

Target group(s): Inspectors employed by Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities

Geographical scope(s) of project: Not restricted, but so far we have run schools in Giza and Luxor

Achievements/progress to date: Graduated 200 students (and provided further training and practice opportunities for the Egyptian supervisors). Since 2005 we have run a total of 7 field-schools including Beginners, Advanced, Salvage and Publications Field -schools
