Abstract: This booklet describes the SNV experience in three community-based tourism projects in Botswana and concludes with an overview of preconditions that have to be met for a community to operate a successful tourism business. A successful tourism venture requires: (1) existence of a market for the project’s tourism product; (2) generation of substantial income and employment opportunities; (3) institutional embedding; (4) a scale of the project that is appropriate to the capabilities and human resources within the community; (5) involvement of an organization as a partner in project development and commitment to provide continued support; and (6) protection of the natural environment. Also there is no substitute to community empowerment. The lessons learnt from the projects in Botswana can be helpful to other individuals and organizations that want to assist communities in developing sustainable tourism projects.
