Participation and young children

Abstract: The author is an independent children’s rights consultant. In this article she challenges widely held views about the need for young children to participate in matters that involve them, arguing that, beyond the fact that it is their right to do so, it is an important element in their development, helping to enhance their self-esteem, confidence and overall capacities, and to strengthen their independence, resilience and social competence. She also shows that they have contributions to make at all levels – from the family to the wider political arena – and these contributions deserve to be included, valued and respected.
