The measurement of physical fitness is common practice in both preventative and rehabilitative exercise programs. The purpose of fitness testing includes: educating individuals about current fitness status relative to population norms, collecting baseline and follow-up data to measure progress in an exercise program, motivation of exercise participants, and risk stratification for chronic disease development. Cardiovascular fitness will be emphasized in this lecture.
