The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a vast cultural complex rising from the shores of the Mediterranean and only a stone's throw from the location of the ancient library of Alexandria, is a new Egyptian enterprise of international scope and ambition.

Built on the location of the Ancient Library of Alexandria with the support of UNESCO and foreign donations, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina was inaugurated in October 2002.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a fully integrated cultural foundation. With its expansive facilities housing a unique combination of libraries, museums, exhibition halls, research and conference centers, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina serves as an international center of intellectual excellence for the promotion of research, dialogue and understanding.

"The new Library of Alexandria, with all its affiliated institutions, is the fruit of the new century, born in the wake of the most far reaching scientific and technological revolution that humanity has ever known."

H.E. President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, 2002
