Easter Bread
1 cup margarine
2 heaped tsp dry yeast
3 tbsp lukewarm water
1 cup lukewarm milk
5 eggs, beaten
¾ cup sugar
1 tsp salt
5 ½ cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
Egg wash
- Melt margarine over low heat and remove from heat once melted and cool.
- Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water then mix with milk, eggs, sugar and salt.
- Add margarine to this mixture.
- Sieve flour and baking powder then add them to the above mixture to form a soft dough.
- Knead dough for 5 minutes.
- Proof dough in an oiled bowl, covered with a damp cloth, until double in size.
- Punch down dough, and shape into desired shapes then arrange them on sheet trays.
- Let rise again until almost double in size.
- Brush with egg wash very carefully so as not to deflate dough.
- Bake in a 200ºC oven until crust is golden brown.
