Mission and main objectives

Alex Med is concerned with researching, documenting and managing the tangible and intangible heritage of Alexandria, and relating it to the sustainable development of the city and the culture of the Mediterranean.

RESEARCH: the acquisition of resources and documentation on the past and the present are an important activity in the Center which has a number of databases covering many aspects of the city's heritage. These databases, including an extensive collection of photographs and oral histories, are available for research purposes in fields such as ethnography, sociology, architecture and the arts.

DIALOGUE: tolerance and dialogue are promoted through a variety of activities including international conferences, exhibitions, exchange programs and specialized publications. Moreover, Alex-Med is the head of the national network of the Anna Lindh Foundation in Egypt, a foundation whose mission is to promote dialogue and tolerance between the peoples of the Mediterranean.

DISSEMINATION: knowledge on Alexandria and the Mediterranean is disseminated through various means such as publications, websites, exhibitions and public conferences given by key speakers. Recent projects include for example the Birth of the Seventh Art in Alexandria on Alexandrian cinema, and the Hamamat (or Turkish Baths) of Alexandria.

HERITAGE: heritage management, urban planning and cultural tourism are key areas of activity. Heritage projects include surveys on endangered buildings and projects to safeguard the city's Ottoman and Greco-Roman heritage in particular.

DEVELOPMENT: likewise, Alex-Med is deeply involved in promoting the city's development working with stakeholders such as the Governorate of Alexandria, and members of civil society.

PUBLISHING: Alex-Med's books, including monographs and the quarterly Newsletter, CDs, maps and websites cover a wide range of subjects contributing to the Center's goals.

COOPERATION: Alex-Med works with many partners, both locally and in the international arena. Exchange of skills and technology through collaborative projects have helped to making it a center for dialogue and excellence.
