The IFLA Environment, Sustainability and Libraries Section (ENSULIB) is pleased to announce the publication of the IFLA Guidelines for Green Libraries – Step-by-Step Implementation Manual. This free, practical resource supports libraries in transforming the principles of the IFLA Guidelines for Green Libraries into concrete action. It provides a clear, adaptable pathway that libraries of all types and sizes — including public, academic, school, national, and special libraries — can use to advance sustainability according to their own local contexts, priorities, and resources.
Building on the strategic framework of the Guidelines, the Step-by-Step Implementation Manual translates sustainability concepts into achievable measures and encourages libraries to develop their own approaches through gradual implementation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
The Manual also connects library sustainability initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By linking everyday library operations, services, and community programmes to global priorities such as quality education, climate action, reduced inequalities, and sustainable communities, libraries can make meaningful contributions to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
