The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) published the first public working draft of Strings on the Web: Language and Direction Metadata on 16 July 2026.

Prepared by the W3C Internationalization Working Group, the document sets out recommended practices for identifying the language of text strings and whether they should be read from left to right or right to left.

ALA Council adopts Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Libraries

American Library Association (ALA)

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) Council has adopted “Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Libraries,” a new resource designed to help libraries develop and revise policies for the ethical, human-centered use of artificial intelligence.

Developed by ALA’s 30-member Artificial Intelligence Policy Working Group, the guidance reflects the perspectives and expertise of members from across the association. Formed by Council at the 2025 Annual Conference in Philadelphia, the working group considered the practical, philosophical, ethical and operational implications of AI for libraries and library workers.

Revised between 2019 and 2025, and approved in 2026, this updated edition  responds to major developments in audiovisual librarianship and offers renewed guidance for a rapidly changing field. Building on the 2004 edition and the 2017 draft, the 2026 Guidelines are the first peer-reviewed and officially endorsed version in over twenty years.

The Libraries Serving Persons with Print Disabilities (LPD) Standing Committee has published the Guidelines for Inclusive Library Services for Persons with Print Disabilities—the result of several years of collaborative work and a significant step forward for inclusive librarianship worldwide.

Inclusion and accessibility are not optional extras for libraries; they are core democratic responsibilities. Equal access to information, education, and culture is a fundamental right, anchored in international frameworks such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. When physical spaces, digital services, or media formats are inaccessible, libraries risk excluding entire communities. Addressing these barriers is therefore both a matter of rights and of institutional credibility.

The Web of Things Working Group has published the First Public Working Draft of the Web of Things (WoT) Thing Description 2.0. This document describes a formal information model and a common representation for a Web of Things (WoT) Thing Description (TD), Version 2.0. A Thing Description describes the metadata and interfaces of Things, where a Thing is an abstraction of a physical or virtual entity that provides interactions to and participates in the Web of Things. Thing Descriptions provide a set of interactions based on a small vocabulary that makes it possible both to integrate diverse devices and to allow diverse applications to interoperate.

“This document establishes and defines a voluntary standard numbering system for the unique and international identification of audiovisual works (as defined in 3.1). An International Standard Audiovisual Number (ISAN) identifies an audiovisual work throughout its life and is intended for use wherever precise and unique identification of an audiovisual work would be desirable. As an identifier, it can be used for various purposes, such as to assist allocation of royalties among right holders, to track the use of audiovisual works, for information retrieval and for anti-piracy purposes, such as verifying title registrations.

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) announced today that its draft updated Access & License Indicators (ALI) Recommended Practice (NISO RP-22-202X) is available for public comment through September 18. Originally published in 2015, this Recommended Practice defines the metadata indicators used to indicate free-to-read content, as well as for linking to license terms for the use/re-use of that content. The public comment focus will be limited to the changed/added material in the Recommended Practice.
