Objectives

To establish a unique e-collection of prominent Egyptian and Arab writers known for their rich literary works. Naguib Mahfouz, Yusuf Idris, Al Khansa, Taha Hussein, Youssef El Sebaay, Amina Said, Ahsan Abdel Koddous, and many other ingenious authors deserve to be studied and admired and their work preserved for future generations.

Deliverables

  • Educate Egyptian as well as world citizens, on the rich Arab culture in literature
  • Preserve the Arabic literary masterpieces for a future generations
  • Establish BA as a leader in the digitization of Arabic literature

Public Access to Online Databases
Library Services

Objectives

Allow Egyptian users access to the latest science and technology information to enable the development of this country. To establish the BA as a leader in high tech information research with unrestricted access to the most up-to-date databases highlighting subjects such as medicine, environment, water, history of science, biotechnology, and many more.

Deliverables

  • Accessibility allow unique to the BA patrons to the ever increasing world of information
  • Introduce new techniques of information research to the BA members.

Book Mobile Outreach
Library Services

Objectives

To institute equal community involvement in all our citizens, the Library would like to bring the pleasures of reading to the public. The Book Mobile Outreach van will be a literary carrier providing loved classics to audiences at nursing homes, orphanages, hospitals, and schools within the Egyptian community.

Deliverables

  • Initiate an active role of the BA within the community
  • Create availability of BA resources to those who are less fortunate
  • Increase the publicity and recognition of the BA and its goals within the community

The Interactive Art Experience
Library Services

Objectives

Following the incorporation of the arts books into the Multimedia Library and creating an Arts & Multimedia Library, our next step is creating an interactive art experience, applying technology to appeal to the users multiple senses, meanwhile enriching the knowledge of the arts thus creating a world of art discovery at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. What more can a library offer, when a user wants to explore Mozart and discovers he/she can read about his life, listen to his music with the quality of a live performance, watch an opera enhanced enough to see every emotion the heroine is feeling, sign into a chat room and discuss the discoveries with other Mozart lovers, and then log into an interactive website giving details of the lives, society, and habits of the people of Vienna in the 1700s.

Deliverables

  • Institute the BA as a pioneer in interactive art education, reflection, and analysis
  • Provide BA users with an engulfing art experience that appeals to all five of the senses
  • Provide a iste where people of the arts can congregate, share, explore, and debate their artistic conceptions

The Green Library
Library Services

Objectives

  • To realize how environmental organizations around the Mediterranean can contribute to the Library's collections and activities. The project aims at a long-term engagement.
  • To share their expertise and engagement regarding ways to restore the environment in and around the Mediterranean.
  • To stimulate public participation and dialogue between the various stakeholders, who might assist in creating a permanent department in the Library with vital information about environment and sustainable development, problems and solutions.
  • To produce a quarterly newsletter with current environmental issues of the Mediterranean region, as well as information on the Mediterranean Green Library.
  • To arrange seminars and workshops on urgent issues with NGOs and other groups in civil society to stimulate their active participation and support of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, such as by providing expert knowledge and publications to the collections.
  • To develop seminars, workshops, or possible school programs for the community youth, to educate them about the current environmental issues in their region.

Deliverables

  • Provide an information center filled with resources that focus on environmental and developmental issues
  • Arrange debates, lectures, conferences, and exhibitions focusing on global, regional and local environmental and developmental issues
  • Provide the Egyptian community a forum in which they voice their concerns, propositions, and resolutions to the growing environmental risk in Egypt

Reform Educational Packages
Library Services

Objectives

  • To create learning resource packages (booklets, books, periodicals, databases, websites) available at the Library reference desks, educating the BA patrons on highlighted aspects of political, economic, cultural, and social reform
  • To establish a link between the resource packages and topics being discussed in the Arab Reform Forum, to develop community awareness in the need and urgency of reform.

Deliverables

  • Providing the community with educational resources to stimulate a need for reform
  • Educate users how to effectively debate topics of reform through study of current situations, past resolutions, benchmark studies, etc.

Library of the 21st Century Forum

Objectives

To host an international conference of the top minds and professionals in the library services and information science field. The conference will be an open dialogue forum discussing topics concerning current topics in information science, establishing international standards in library services, and modernization of informational technology.

  • Create an open dialogue between the BA and other international libraries and library associations
  • Institute a set of standards in library and information science to create uniformity of libraries around the world.

Information Literacy Learning Center
Library Services

Objectives

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is committed to helping library patrons develop research skills that encourage and support critical thinking and lifelong learning, key components to information literacy. The BA is taking the responsibility of teaching its users effective research skills, exposing them to the various information resources and facilitating the understanding of the structure of information and methods of searching, compiling, and evaluating information.

Deliverables

Users are expected to become better learners. Some will likely become very enthusiastic as they discover new worlds of information and ways of accessing it. Nevertheless, such training is vital to strengthen the users ability to achieve their research goals.

Library of Peace
Library Services

Objectives

  • To create a peace observatory within the BA
  • To compile resources relating to peace from all different nations, in all different languages
  • To publish an annual "Alexandria Review" summarizing yearly events, issues concerning peace within the nation, region, and world, and breakthroughs in peace missions
  • To denote an "Honorary Librarian of Peace" to serve as the voice for the Library of Peace.
  • To develop a proper cataloging system for books pertaining to peace

Deliverables

  • Promote awareness of world conflicts and highlight recent peaceful resolutions.
  • Establish the BA as an epicenter for peace within a region of turmoil.
