Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt. What You DO NOT Know about Hurricanes and Climate Change

Within the framework of  Simplified Science Program, the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) and  TWAS ARO are organizing a lecture entitled “What You DO NOT Know about Hurricanes and Climate Change”. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Hesham M. El-Askary, Professor of Remote Sensing and Earth System Science, Center of Excellence in Earth Systems Modeling and Observations and Director,  Graduate Programs in Computational and Data Sciences at Schmid College of Science and Technology, on Saturday, 7 October 2017; 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center, Lecture Hall.

In this lecture, Prof. El-Askary will attempt to answer the simple questions of what is a hurricane, and how does it form, and whether or not countries as Egypt and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa region will ever be affected by a hurricane?

 Simplified Science Program is  a Series of Scientific Lectures aiming at introducing  peaking and newly emerging fields of science to the public audience in a simple matter.

Cancer Awarness Seminar “New Trends in Cancer Research”

Within the framework of  Health Education Club, the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) and the TWAS-ARO are organizing the Cancer Awarness Seminar entitled “New Trends in Cancer Research”, on Monday, 30 October 2017; 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center, Lecture Hall.

The Seminar aims at raising the public awareness of cancer, and encourage its early detection and prevention. During this one-day Seminar, we will discuss different types of cancer that are of high incidence and prevalence in Egypt and Arab countries, how to face it and reduce the disease's stigma by educating people about its symptoms and treatment options. The Seminar will also highlight the new trends in research.

The Seminar will be presented by:

Prof. Mohamed El-Shinawi, Professor of General Surgery; 

Prof. Mohamed El-Debikey, Professor of Pediatric Surgery; 

Prof. Noha El-Sharnouby, Professor of Anesthesia, ICU and Nutrition; 

Prof. Ahmed Morcy, Professor  of Orthopedics; and 

Prof. Tarek Yousef, Professor of Surgery.

Health Education Club: is a  public health awareness program. It aims to provide the public community with the opportunity to learn and share the attributes of a healthy lifestyle through regular educational sessions dealing with different health topics.

TWAS-ARO Young Scientists Training Program: Ethics in Research and Publications

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) in collaboration with The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries' Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) is organizing the "Ethics in Life Sciences Research and Publications' workshop within the framework of the Young Scientists Training Program. The training will be held on 26-27 November 2017 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt.

The training aims at enhancing the researchers' awareness on the ethics to be considered in conducting Life Sciences Research, with particular focus on publication ethics, authorship, and authorship conflicts.


Eligibility Criteria:
 -Arab Researcher (Master/ PhD Students and PhD holder)
 -Under the age of 40
 -Engaged in conducting Life Sciences research.

TWAS-ARO Roundtable Discussions on Responsible Science

The Arab Regional Office of The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS-ARO) in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Center for Special Studies and Programs is organizing Roundtable Discussions on Responsible Science, on 28-29 November 2017 at Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt.

This event aims to bring together eminent scientists, policy makers along with young Arab scientists to discuss pressing topics related to responsible scientific research and how to develop mechanisms to ensure integrity in the research process.

TWAS/BioVisionAlexandria.NXT 2018 “Science Diplomacy: Voices of the South”

Call For Applications

TWAS/BioVisionAlexandria.NXT 2018 will be the fifth BioVisionAlexandira.NXT to be organized in Alexandria, Egypt. It intends to explore the importance of science diplomacy to the young scientists in the developing world.

The event will be held on 18–19 April 2018, where TWAS/BVA.NXT 2018 participants will be offered the opportunity to meet policy makers, experts, academics and young promising scientists from the South to provide them with the needed skills to build their own capacities and help them in the advancement of their developing countries.

Best young scientists will have the opportunity to present their innovative ideas and their impact on the development of societies in the event. Furthermore, they will be invited to participate in BioVisionAlexandria 2018 Conference (20–22 April 2018, Bibliotheca Alexandrina).
Priority will be offered to the best innovative research, and to research papers that foster science diplomacy efforts.

Deadline for applications: 1 January 2018.

Criteria of Application:

• Applicants should not be older than 35 years of age (by 1 January 2018).

• Applicants should be Master’s, PhD students, or Postdoctoral scholars working in the field of life sciences.

• Applicants should have innovative research papers.

BioVisionAlexandria 2018

It is our pleasure to announce that the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is organizing its ninth International Biennial Conference, BioVisionAlexandria (BVA) 2018, 20–22 April 2018, Alexandria, Egypt; in partnership with World Life Science Forum, BV Lyon.

The theme of BVA 2018 is “New Life Sciences: Towards SDGs”. The Conference will highlight the important role science plays with regards to achieving SDGs. More insights on the science-based decision-making will be introduced and how this affects the developing world. Numerous scientists, leaders, and decision makers will gather to address life sciences’ contribution towards the prosperity of the world. Furthermore, within the framework of BVA 2018, we are pursuing the launch of the first conference on “Robotics and Bio-robotics in Life Sciences” to take place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

During the Conference, numerous distinguished speakers will share their experiences and insights with the large audience, mostly from developing countries.
As usual, we aim at gathering distinguished leaders in science, industry, society, policy-making, media and civil society to explore the different ways in which life sciences can help meet the challenges we face.

BioVisionAlexandria 2018 Poster Session Call for Posters

BioVisionAlexandria (BVA) 2018 organizers cordially invite young researchers to present their research work during the Poster Session at BioVisionAlexandria 2018  international conference. BVA is an important gathering that brings together distinguished speakers and Nobel Laureates from the four corners of the globe through rich discussions that commemorate science and the finest achievements of the human intellect.

The theme of BVA 2018 is “New Life Sciences: Towards SDGs”. The conference will highlight the important role science plays with regards to achieving SDGs. More insights on the science-based-decisions-making will be introduced and how this affects the developing world. Many scientists, leaders, and decision makers will gather to address life sciences’ contribution towards the prosperity of the world

Accordingly, the poster should cover related subject(s) in the field of Health, Environment or Agriculture, in response to SDGs.

BVA 2018 Poster Session aims at providing young researchers the opportunity to meet with life sciences professionals, and present their work in a professional atmosphere of discussion and interchange.

Deadline for abstract submission is Monday, 1 January 2018.
