Biography:

Dr. El-Bassioni is a 1960 graduate of the University of Alexandria, Egypt. He worked as a Reactor Engineer in the Egyptian Atomic Energy Commission until 1964. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Mich. in 1969. He joined the Nuclear Engineering Faculty in Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA until 1980. During his work as Professor, he supervised over 15 Ph.D and M.Sc. theses. He has a patent on "Spatial Xenon Oscillations Control", cosulted with Westinhouse Electric "Fast Breeder Program", and Science Applications Inc. Application Inc. Oak Ridge Tennesee in the areas of sabotage, and comparison of risks from different energy sources.
In 1980 he joined the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as a Senior Reliability Analyst and was appointed as Section Chief for PRA in the offices of Nuclear Reactor Regulation and the office of Nuclear Research. Dr. El-Bassioni is a member of the American Nuclear Society, was the Chairman and organiser of several ANS sessions, as well as University of Pittsburgh meetings. He is the Author and co-auther of over 30 technical papers. He represented the U.S. in several European Technical meetings (e.g., IAEA Vienna, England, Sweeden, Germany, Italy, ....). He retired from US NRC on August 2010.
