Sawris Cultural Award for the year 2013

Each year since 2005, the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development has presented awards for excellence to Egyptian authors, screen writers and playwrights with the aim of activating the literary movement in Egypt, encouraging the artistic creativity of its writers and improving the chances of the emergence of new talents.

The competition places great emphasis on developing Egyptian new authors and promoting indigenous literature. It is also dedicated to providing a forum for the screenwriters to display their talents in a bid to support the development and growth of the Egyptian film industry.

The newly-added category of best playwriting aims to help playwrights to get their work out into the theatre world.

TWAS Regional Prize 2013: Call for Nomination

This year’s theme is Public Understanding and Popularization of Science


TWAS Regional Prizes 2013 will be awarded in recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to popularize science, and have developed new strategies that serve the popularization of science and technology in developing countries.

Each TWAS Regional Prize winner will receive a USD 3,000 cash award.

All five regional winners of the prize will be announced during the next TWAS General Meeting. This year’s meeting, the 13th General Conference and 24rd General Meeting, will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2013.


Eligibility Criteria
Candidates for a TWAS-ARO Prize must be scientists who have been working and living in a developing country for at least ten years. They must meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  • Scientific research achievement of outstanding significance for the development of scientific thought.
  • Outstanding contribution to the application of Science and Technology to industry or to human well-being in a developing country.

The nominations will only be accepted and valid from:
1. Members of TWAS-ARO (www.bibalex.org/twasaro/members/list.htm)
2. Science Academies, National Research Councils, Universities, Scientific Institutions from the Arab Region (a signed, stamped official nomination letter should be sent along with the nomination form, CV and list of publications to both emails or address shown below).

Note: Self nominations are not allowed.

  •  TWAS is inviting nominations from all its members as well as science academies, national research councils, universities and scientific institutions in developing and developed countries.
  • The  nomination form must clearly state the contribution the candidate has made to the development of the particular field of science for which the prize would be awarded.

  •  Nominations of women scientists are particularly encouraged.

TWAS-ARO Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2012
Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Arab Region

Knowing the scarcity of water in the Arab region,and the problems the region will face in case no new efficient and effective techniques were developed in the field of water resources management, TWAS-ARO chose the theme of "Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Arab Region" for the Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2012.

The prize will be awarded to a young scientist from the Arab region who conducted innovative or pioneer researches on water resources management in the Middle East, covering topics such as:

  • Outstanding achievements in the construction or improvement of water and waste disposal projects serving the financially needy communities in developing countries.
  • The impact of climate change on water scarcity in North Africa and the Middle East.
  • Lowering the cost of desalination technology and working in new techniques to make the process of resolving long term water scarcity needs in the Middle East and North Africa more affordable.


The value of the prize is 3,000 USD.

Eligibility:
Applicants must:
1. Be Natives of an Arab country.
2. Be Living and working in an Arab country.
3. Hold a PhD.
4. Have a proven track record in his/her field. 5. Be under 40 years old by 1 January 2012.

Islamic Development Bank Prizes for Science and Technology, 11th Edition (1434H-2013G)

Islamic Development Bank (IDB)
The IDB Prizes for Science and Technology, 11th Edition (1434H- 2013G)

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) announces the eleventh edition of its Prizes for Science and Technology (1434H-2013G).

The IDB established the Prizes in 1422H (2001G) to acknowledge and encourage the achievements of the scientific institutions.

These Prizes are annually awarded to institutions in IDB Member Countries in the following three categories:

Category-1: Outstanding scientific or technological contribution to the socio-economic development of a member country.
Category-2: Outstanding contribution to any of the scientific disciplines of engineering, agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, information technology, optronics, material sciences, pharmaceutical, industrial microelectronics, nanotechnology and alternative energy sources.
Category-3: Noted scientific research institutions in IDB least developed member countries (LDMCs).

Each winner receives a cash reward of USD 100,000 along with a trophy and a certificate.

Applications are invited from public or private national, regional and international academic or research or development institutions in IDB Member Countries. Applicants can fill in an electronic version of the application form on the IDB website www.isdb.org , following the posted guidelines and sending the completed application to STPrize1434@isdb.org

The completed forms, along with any attachments, should be received by the IDB Science and Technology and Technical Cooperation Division or at one of the IDB Regional Offices no later than 29 Dhul-Qa'dah 1433H (15 October 2012G).

Two independent committees from outside the Bank will select the Winners which will be rewarded during the 38th Board of IDB Governors Meeting scheduled to take place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan from 11-12 Rajab 1434H (21-22 May 2013G).

TWAS Arab Regional Prize 2012 for
"Building Scientific Institutions"

This year's theme is "Building Scientific Institutions"

TWAS Regional Prizes 2012 will be awarded in recognition of individuals who have played key roles in the establishment of vibrant scientific institutions and to those who have significantly expanded the activities of already-established institutions in the developing world.

Each TWAS Regional Prize winner will receive a USD3,000 cash award.

All five regional winners of the prize will be announced during the next TWAS General Meeting. This year's meeting, the 12th General Conference and 23rd General Meeting, will be held in Tianjin, China, from 18 to 21 September 2012.

The 2012 Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize in Human Health

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, and illycaffé have established high-level prizes to honour distinguished scientists from developing countries. The Trieste Town Council and the Trieste International Foundation for Scientific Progress and Freedom are collaborating in this effort.

The prize is named the Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize to honour the late former President of illycaffè and in recognition of the unique and fundamental role that the Trieste System of scientific institutions plays in promoting science and technology in the developing world

Purpose The prize has been established to give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by individual scientists in developing countries.

Award: The prize carries a monetary award of USD100,000, generously provided by illycaffè, a medal and a certificate bearing a citation highlighting the major contributions for which the prize is awarded.

FONDS SUEZ Environmental Initiatives- Institut de France

The FONDS SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT Initiatives - Institut de France Awards are intended to reward projects and innovations contributing to the development of water services, sanitation and waste management in developing countries.

There are two categories for the FONDS SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT Initiatives- Institut de France Awards, based on the type of candidature:

  • The Access to Essential Services Award is a prize of 50,000 EUROS (fifty thousand Euros) rewarding an innovative project developed by a non-profit organisation.
  • The Social Entrepreneurship Award is a prize of 50,000 EUROS (fifty thousand Euros) rewarding an initiative implemented by a social entrepreneur

TWAS 2012 Prizes will be awarded to individual scientists who have been working and living in a developing country for at least ten years immediately prior to their nomination, in recognition of an outstanding contribution to knowledge in the following eight fields of science:
Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Mathematics, Medical Sciences and Physics.

Candidates must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
1. Scientific research achievement of outstanding significance for the development of scientific thought.
2. Outstanding contribution to the application of Science and Technology to industry or to human well-being in a developing country.
Please note that the re-nomination of a previously declined candidate shall be accepted only if it bears substantially new elements for judgment.

Members of TWAS and candidates for TWAS membership are not eligible for TWAS Prizes.

2012 TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences

Announcement Date: 8 January 2012

2012 TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences With funding from the Brazilian government for four years, the annual prize will carry a USD15,000 cash award.

The prize reflects the Brazilian government's strong support for TWAS and, more generally, for helping to build scientific capacity in the developing world. Such support has been reflected in the efforts of the former Presidents of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso (TWAS Fellow 1984) and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and the former Ministers of Science and Technology Jose Israel Vargas (TWAS Fellow 1988) and Sergio Rezende (TWAS Fellow 2004) President Cardoso and Minister Vargas played central roles in the creation of the TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences.

The TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize is named after the renowned Brazilian economist, Celso Monteiro Furtado (1920-2004).

Furtado's research focused on the plight of the poor in Brazil and throughout South America. He emphasized the importance of devising economic development policies that focused on building a strong industrial base for what he often referred to as "peripheral economics". He also foresaw the rise of the globalized world, which he said would be spurred by the "the spread of the world economy", and he urged developing countries to take steps to ensure that they would not be marginalized in the face of the these trends.

The TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize is accompanied by a medal. Prizes are usually presented on a special occasion, often coinciding with the General Meeting of TWAS.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Candidates for the TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences must be scientists who have been working and living in a developing country for at least ten years immediately prior to their nomination.
  • Candidates for the TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences must meet the following criterion: To have made an outstanding contribution in both understanding and addressing social sciences disciplines such as economics, political sciences and sociology.
  • Members of TWAS and candidates for TWAS membership are not eligible for the prize.
  • Self nominations will not be considered.

NOMINATIONS:
  • TWAS is inviting nominations from all its members as well as science academies, national research councils, universities and scientific Institutions in developing and developed countries.
  • Nominations should be made on the relevant nomination form (which is attached to the announcement and could also be found through this link: www.twas.org > Programmes > Prizes).

TWAS-ARO Young Arab Scientist (YAS) prize 2011

"Chemistry for Sustainable Development in the Arab World"

In celebration of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011), TWAS-ARO YAS prize will be with the theme being: "Chemistry for Sustainable Development in the Arab World"

Chemistry can, and should be part of solutions to many societal problems in the Arab World. In a world where headlines daily proclaim the global challenges in providing sustainable food and energy, protecting the environment, improving health care, and providing education for future generations.

The prize will be awarded to a young Arab scientist who has significant contributions in the field of chemistry to solve current problems in the Arab region. The prize holds a financial contribution of US$ 3,000 and will be announced by December 2011.

Application criteria

The nominee should be:

1. An Arab country native.
2. Residing and working in an Arab country.
3. Holds a PhD.
4. Has remarkable contribution in his/her field.
5. Less than 40 years by 1 January 2011.

The TWAS-AAS-Microsoft Award for Young Scientists

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, is currently seeking nominations of young scientists in Africa whose research in computer science promises to have a positive impact in the developing world.

Each year, three winners are selected from different countries on the continent. Each recipient receives a Euro 7,000 cash award generously contributed by Microsoft Research, of which EUR 2,000 may be spent at the recipient?s discretion and EUR 5,000 shall be earmarked for further research.

Nominees can be any nationality, but must have been resident and working in Africa for at least the two years immediately prior to their nomination.

Nominees must also have received their most recent degree (Master's or PhD) within the previous ten years. Self-nomination or nomination by selection committee members is not accepted. Nominations of young women computer scientists are particularly encouraged.

The 2011 Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, is seeking nominations for the 2011 Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize.

The Prize, sponsored by Trieste-based ILLYCAFFE, has been established to give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by scientists living and working in the developing countries.

In 2011 the prize will be given for outstanding achievements in Materials Science.

The prize carries a US$100,000 monetary award and medal.

OBASANJO PRIZE 2011

The Olusegun Obasanjo Prize for scientific discovery and/or technological Innovation is intendedto reward and honor African scientists who have made outstanding contributions in scientific discovery or technological innovation.

The TWAS Regional Prizes this year will be awarded in recognition of significant and innovative contributions to scientific educational material, especially the development of "creative programs aiming at stimulating science education in school children", that have helped to advance the quality of science education in the Region.

The BioVision Lilly Award, in conjunction with TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, will honour outstanding scientific achievements made by individual young scientists from developing countries.

The prize will reward three young scientists living and working in a developing country, who have a track record of excellent research in infectious diseases, with an emphasis on tuberculosis preferred, and promise to have a positive impact in the developing world.

Candidates should be nationals of a developing country, under 40 years of age and hold at least a PhD degree with an outstanding academic background.

FameLab Egypt Competition 2011

2010 Global Development Awards and Medals Competition

The Global Development Awards and Medals Competition is an innovative award scheme launched by the Global Development Network (GDN), with generous support from the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan and other donors.

Since its inception in 2000, GDN has awarded roughly US$ 2 million in research and travel grants to finalists and winners. Winners are chosen by an eminent jury at GDN's Annual Global Development Conference, with an audience of over 500 practitioners in the field of development to whom the finalists present. This year, the 12th Annual Global Development Conference will be held in BOGOTA, Colombia in January 2011.

AU Continental Scientific Award Competition

The Commission of the African Union is committed to support the use and development of science in Africa and has initiated with its key development partners The African Union Scientific Award Programme.

The objective of this programme is to award Cash Prizes and Recognition Certificates to excelling African researchers for their achievements in Earth and Life Sciences, and Basic, Science, Technology and Innovation sectors.

African Union Scientific Awards Programme targets young researchers at Member State level, women at regional level and open to all outstanding scientists at continental level . The programme is designed to celebrate the achievements of African scientists and to promote all efforts to transform scientific research into entrepreneurship, attract investments to Africa, and create research centers of excellence. Biodiversity Conservation and Informatics.

The prize will be awarded to a young scientist from the Arab Region who has made outstanding achievements in the field of Biodiversity with special emphasis on the use of informatics techniques and computer analysis for the conservation of biodiversity in the Arab Region.

The prize holds a financial contribution of 3,000 USD.

2. Lives and works in an Arab country
3. Holds a PhD
4. Has remarkable contribution in his/her field
5. Less than 40 years old by 1st of January 2010.

The 2010 TWAS-AAS-Microsoft Award for Young Computer Scientists working in Africa

TWAS-AAS-MICROSOFT AWARD FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS
Microsoft Research, in partnership with TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world and AAS, the African Academy of Sciences, has established the TWAS-AAS-Microsoft Award for Young Scientists for the three year period 2009-2011.

PURPOSE
The prize has been established to recognize young scientists working and living in Africa whose research in computer science has had or could have a positive impact in the developing world.

AWARDS
Each year three winners will be selected from three different African countries. Each winner will receive EUR 7,000, generously contributed by Microsoft Research, of which EUR 2,000 may be spent at the recipient's discretion and EUR 5,000 shall be earmarked for further research. Each prize also carries a certificate bearing a citation highlighting the major contributions for which the prize is awarded. The prizes will be presented to the recipients at a special ceremony to be held each year in Nairobi, Kenya, and organized by TWAS and AAS.

Present Around The World (PATW) Competition

The IET and its Young Professionals in Egypt are pleased to announce the organization of the IET's Present Around The World (PATW) competition in Egypt this year. PATW is a Global competition organized by the IET and lead by the Young Professionals of its members worldwide.

This year the National PATW IET competition will take place in Egypt for the first time on 26th July 2010 (date and venue are subject to final confirmations). The main focus of the competition is on students, graduates or recent graduates who are capable of presenting their engineering projects and ideas. PATW is not restricted to an engineering discipline or subject, but rather open for engineering relevance and capabilities in presentation. Every engineer/competitor will present his/her project for 10 minutes with 5 minutes for Q&A. The National winner from Egypt will have the chance to participate in the Regional finals and hopefully in the Global finals in UK before the end of this year.

The IET allocates a winner and runner up (1st and 2nd place) prizes equivalent to 175 British Pound and 75 British Pound respectively in addition to a free one year membership to The IET. The global PATW winner is eligible to a prize equivalent to 1000 British Pound!

Volunteers helping in organising the event, are welcome and will be provided a certificate of merit.

Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize in Renewable Energies for Environmentally Sustainable Industrial Technologies

Call for nominations for the Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize in Renewable Energies for Environmentally Sustainable Industrial Technologies has been extended to 15 June 2010.

The Trieste Science Prize (TSP), sponsored by ILLYCAFF and administered by TWAS, has been established to give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by scientists from the developing countries.

The first four-year cycle of the TSP (2005-2008) focused on basic science.

The second four-year cycle (2009-2012) of the prize, called Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize to honour the late former President of ILLYCAFF, focuses on sustainability issues in various fields of sciences.

In 2010 the prize, which carries a US$100,000 monetary award generously contributed by ILLYCAFF, will be given for outstanding achievements in: Renewable energies for environmentally sustainable industrial technologies.

The deadline to receive nominations is 15 June 2010.

2009 Emerald/ALCS African Engineering Research Fund Award.

Emerald and ALCS (The Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society), in association with INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications) and the African Engineering Education Association (AEEA), are pleased to announce the launch of the 2009 Emerald/ALCS African Engineering Research Fund Award.

The Award-winning entry will receive a cash prize of 2,500 GBP (approximately US$4,000 equivalent) to fund the winning research project. Applications should focus on the subject of material sciences, and should also address the dissemination of knowledge for the social good with a specific orientation toward benefit for Africa.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for Students at Master Level

NOTE: The application deadline may come to an end by 31 December 2011 for some of the courses (most of them will have a scholarship application deadline falling around mid or end January 2012)

The European Union's Erasmus Mundus (EM)programme aims at enhancing the quality in higher education through individual scholarships and academic co-operation between universities from Europe and the rest of the world.

For 2012 and 2013, an increased support will be provided through the Erasmus Mundus and TEMPUS programmes for students, professors and universities from the South Mediterranean countries.

The up-coming academic year (2012) dedicated additional funding has been provided under Erasmus Mundus Action 1 in order to award full study scholarships for master students from Tunisia and Egypt.

These scholarships are intended to cover the student's full participation costs in one of the 131 existing Erasmus Mundus Master courses (EMMCs), covering a very broad range of disciplines and representing some of the best higher education programmes Europe can offer today

Students interested in participating in one of these master courses are invited to apply for their scholarship directly to Universities implementing these programmes.

The specific application criteria together with detailed information regarding the selection process as well as the scholarship amount can be found on the dedicated website of each individual master course (the master course website addresses are available under the above referred link).

The calls for scholarship applications to the various EMMCs are already open and students are encouraged to APPLY NOW since the application deadline may come to an end by 31 December 2012 for some of the courses (most of them will have a scholarship application deadline falling around mid or end January 2012)

The German Egyptian Research Short term Scholarship GERSS is a program jointly funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) and the German Academic Exchange Service, Bonn (DAAD) in order to finance short term scholarships for young Egyptian scientists to travel to Germany. Programme objectives:

This programme is designed to qualify future leaders and change agents. It is for young professionals with an academic background in Politics, Law, Economics and Administration as well as a range of other disciplines such as the Natural and Engineering Sciences.

BP Cambridge Master's Degree Scholarships for Egypt

In collaboration with BP Egypt, the Cambridge Overseas Trust offers a number of scholarships annually to enable graduates of outstanding academic merit to pursue courses of study in subjects to be considered on their merits at the University of Cambridge.

The scholarships are open to citizens of Egypt who already have, or expect to obtain before October 2011, a first class or, exceptionally, a high second class honours degree or its equivalent from a recognised university.

ONE-YEAR POSTGRADUATE STUDY Scholarships are offered for graduates to pursue a one-year postgraduate course of study. The scholarships, tenable for one year, will normally cover the University Composition Fee at the overseas rate, approved College fees, a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single student (no dependants' allowances will be paid) and a contribution towards a round-trip airfare.

Field of Study :
Preference will be given to candidates seeking master's degrees in petroleum related studies. However, business, economics and development studies will also be considered.

Other Conditions :
- Successful candidates must sign, before their departure to Cambridge, an enrollment agreement with BP Egypt whereby they will agree to return back, domicile and work in Egypt after their graduation from the University of Cambridge for double the period they studied at the University of Cambridge.

TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme for Scientists from sub-Saharan Africa

The TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme provides postdoctoral researchers from sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) with the opportunity to make a "Cooperation Visit" to an institute in Germany of no more than 3 months.

Under this programme, researchers are assisted in making a "Cooperation Visit" to an institute in Germany. Such visits will have a duration of no more than three (3) months and must be undertaken within 12 months of the award.

The aim of the visit is to discuss research collaboration with German scientists, possibly including some preliminary experiments, with the ultimate goal of developing longer-term collaboration, perhaps through other Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, or German Research Foundation) programmes. TWAS will cover visa, health insurance and travel expenses, while DFG will provide subsistence costs for the stay in Germany. The administration and financial operation of TWAS is undertaken by UNESCO in accordance with an agreement signed by the two organizations.

Deadline: 31 March each year.

TWAS-ARO Young Affiliates, 2013-2017

Every year, each of the five TWAS Regional Offices selects up to five scientists to be 'TWAS Young Affiliates' for a period of five years.

During their tenure, Affiliates are invited to participate in TWAS general meetings and conferences.

This program, which began in 2007, seeks to identify the best young scientists in each region of the developing world and provide them with opportunities to network with one another, and with TWAS Fellows, as well as attend international conferences and other events for young scientists.

The appointments are made for a period of five years (covering five TWAS General Meetings).

2013 EOL Rubenstein Fellows Program

Over the past four years the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) has grown to become one of the world's largest aggregators of biodiversity information. Now featuring information on over one million taxa, EOL brings together trusted content from 219 scholarly content partners, including 57 current and former Rubenstein Fellows.

This year, EOL is inviting proposals supporting the use of EOL in biological research - it is time to see what the wealth of information in EOL can do.

In preparation for this call, EOL solicited research topics with the potential to illuminate large-scale questions in biology and advance biological research. Eleven specific requests were selected by the EOL curator community as the most promising, tractable, and potentially impactful.

This year's call for proposals is to extract data from the EOL collection and advance the corresponding inquiry in one or several of these "Wishes for Research". These "Big Data" questions have not previously been tractable because the information needed to address them was simply not accessible.

TWAS Visiting Scientist Programme

The TWAS Visiting Scientist Programme supports visits of internationally renowned scientists to institutions located in developing countries, especially those located in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

The objective of the programme is to provide institutions and research groups in developing countries, especially those with limited outside contacts, with the opportunity to establish long-term links with world leaders in science and so help develop capacity-building in their country. Under the programme, prospective host institutions can invite internationally renowned experts in areas of science other than mathematics and physics to collaborate in research and training.

The visit should have a minimum stay of two weeks at the host institution. TWAS will cover the cost of the air ticket and will provide an honorarium of USD 500, while the host institution is expected to cover local expenses. Attached below please find the relevant application form.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in cooperation with the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, announces the call for applications for the Educational Institute for Responsible Research on Infectious Diseases: Ensuring Safe Science in the 21st Century.

The Institute will take place in Aqaba, Jordan during 8 to 13 September 2012. It aims to develop a network of faculty in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region able to teach issues related to research with dual use potential by using tenets of responsible science and active learning pedagogical techniques.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be faculty who have been working and living in Egypt, Yemen, Algeria or Abu Dhabi and should apply in teams of 2-3 from each institution.
  • Applicants must stay for the entire institute from 8 to 13 September 2012.
  • Applicants must agree to use one or more of the instructional materials developed at the Institute in their teaching, preferably in the fall semester 2012.
  • It is expected that one member/team will participate in the follow-up evaluation meeting during the academic year 2012-2013.

Trieste NEXT Festival (28 - 30 September 2012)

TWAS has been invited to participate in an international science festival called Trieste NEXT, from 28 to 30 September 2012. This festival will be focused on "FOOD", and will involve all the major scientific institutes from Trieste, in the effort to deliver a message about the importance of research for food security, sustainable development and well-being.

For this reason, among other initiatives, we are now collecting exotic (for Italy) recipes from all the countries where TWAS operates.

Ideally, the recipes we would like to receive should be fairly simple to prepare, and speak of the local country where they come from.

Each recipe should carry:
Name of the recipe (Title):
Ingredients (How many servings?);
Instructions on how to prepare it;
Name and affiliation of the TWAS Member, Young Affiliate, Affiliate Alumnus, or recipient of TWAS prize, fellowship, grant, etc.

The recipes will be collected in a booklet, and presented at the Trieste NEXT festival. They will also be shared online with all the TWAS community.

The 2012 L'OREAL-UNESCO Pan Arab Regional Fellowships-Call for Applications

The L'Oreal-UNESCO Pan Arab Fellowships program was one of the first pioneering regional programs aiming towards recognizing Arab women scientists' achievements. Following the success of the L'Oreal-UNESCO Pan Arab Fellowships For Women in Science, the program has been expanded in 2011 to include candidates from 17 Arab countries to further celebrate the phenomenal achievements of the region's women scientists.

In 2012 L'Oreal and UNESCO, for the third year of the program, will grant 10 fellowships to 10 exceptional scientists from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, the Sultanate of Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, U.A.E. and Yemen.

Each Fellow will receive 20,000 USD in recognition of her contribution to the advancement of science and to further progress her career.

TWAS-ARO Young Affiliates for 2012-2016

Every year, each of the five TWAS Regional Offices selects up to five scientists to be "TWAS Young Affiliates" for a period of five years.

This program, which began in 2007, seeks to identify the best young scientists in each region of the developing world and provide them with opportunities to network with one another, and with TWAS Fellows, as well as attend international conferences and other events for young scientists.

The appointments are made for a period of five years (covering five TWAS General Meetings).

Please find below TWAS Young Affiliates eligibility criteria:

1.Less than 40 years old by January 2012.
2.Native of a developing country form the Arab Region.
3.Has at least 10 International publications in peer-reviewed journals.
4.Has lived and worked in a developing country for at least the past three years.

Nominations will only be accepted and valid from:

GERF Call Social Science and Humanities

The Science and Technology Development Funds (STDF) of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of the Federal Republic of Germany, are pleased to announce a joint call for Egyptian-German research projects in the fields of the social sciences and the humanities through the "German-Egyptian Research Fund" (GERF).

The general aim of this call is to promote German-Egyptian research cooperation in the fields of social sciences and the humanities.

2012 EOL Rubenstein Fellows Call for Proposals

The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) is now accepting applications for its 2012 EOL Rubenstein Fellows competition.

This international program seeks to support and extend the impact of original biodiversity research by postgraduates, graduate students, and other scientists, and to tap into the knowledge and expertise of late career and retired scientists. EOL Rubenstein Fellows funds provide partial support for up to one year so that biodiversity research, databases, and media can be effectively translated into rich, online resources available through the Encyclopedia of Life. Fellows are encouraged to engage in collaborative and synthetic work with a community of colleagues. EOL Rubenstein Fellows also help EOL develop effective strategies for engaging and supporting the scientific community.

The Swedish Institute Young Leaders Visitors Program (YLVP) is an intercultural leadership program focused on social media as a tool for positive change. Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships aims to attract top-class experienced researchers from third countries to work and undertake research and transfer of knowledge in Europe for 1 to 2 years (incoming phase), with a view to developing mutually-beneficial research co-operation. If before the incoming phase, the experienced researcher has been active in one of the International Cooperation Partner Countries-ICPC (Annex 1 of People Work Programme as well as chapter 2.2 of the guide), a possibility is provided to assist the experienced researcher to return to this country, thus contributing to establish sustainable cooperation between these countries and European research organizations. Egyptian National Scientific & Technical Information Network (ENSTINET) is pleased to invite researchers to attend the third edition of International Summer School in "Advanced Topics in Cell Model Systems" to be held in Rome-Italy from 6th-11th June 2010 at the Tor Vergata Research Establishment of the Italian National Research Council.

The objectives:

The aim of this school is to support early pharmaceutical research by training young post-PhD investigators, by promoting the exchange of knowledge, supporting skills and know-how and providing access to various technologies. During the course target groups of approx. 12-15 young post-PhD students from all over world will brought together.

The course will impart the latest theoretical and practical aspects on cell model systems, it will positively encourage discussion and exchange of ideas between the post-PhD students, the speakers, and the scientists of the research establishment.

The Tor Vergata research establishment has a unique set of advanced instrumentation and technologies providing a strong technical infrastructure for our Summer School. It combines world-class advanced sensors; precise analytical methods; techniques to prepare membrane models; enhanced imaging capabilities; and sophisticated computational tools for characterizing and modelling cells.

An annually published brochure of the latest developments, the lectures given and the practical exercises will maximize the knowledge transfer to a wider group of interested scientists.

Participants must have:

A degree in either: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Medicine, a basic working knowledge of experimental research.

Preference will be given to:

* Ph.D. students and junior scientists under 35

* To those having not more then five years research experience

Applicants should send their current CV, together with a signed letter of recommendation from a Professor who is aware of their work.

The Research Policy and Cooperation Unit of the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office, the World Health Organization, is pleased to announce the call for research proposals in priority areas of public health for the Biennium 2010-2011(EMRPPH Grant). The guidelines for the proposals along with a list of research priorities and the application form are attached. The guidelines and the application form have been simplified to enable researchers with diverse experience to apply.

The aim of the EMRPPH Grant is to address the local problems and issues of public health importance in the Eastern Mediterranean Region with special emphasis on health systems research. Through a competitive process of selection, funds will be provided to successful research proposals meeting the following criteria:

  • Related to the research areas specified for the EMRPPH 2010-11.
  • Submitted in accordance with the format provided for the EMRPPH Grant
    2010-11.
  • With potential benefit(s) of research results to strengthen health systems, impact health policy and improve public health in the Member States.
  • Not duplicating a proposal submitted to any other international or national agency for funding.

Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange

COMSTECH-TWAS: Joint Research Grants Programme for Young Scientists in OIC Countries

The COMSTECH-TWAS Joint Research Grants Programme is established in response to the needs of promising young researchers in OIC countries, particularly those attached to institutions that lack appropriate research facilities.

Training Course: Capacity Building in Environmental Related Issues in the Field of Geo-mining: Remote Sensing and other Environment-related Issues

TWAS - the academy of sciences for the developing world and FORGEA International - Training and cooperation centre in the field of geo-mining and environment are pleased to announce about a training course on Capacity Building in Environmental Related Issues in the Field of Geo-mining:Remote Sensing and other Environment-related Issues held 17-30 May 2009.

The course will focus on the many topics including:

- Mine site characterization as a prerequisite for remediation;
- Remote sensing techniques applied to satellite and aerial hyper spectral data for land degradation monitoring;
- Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic tomography imaging for characterizing deposits;
- GPS and photogrammetry techniques in quarrying areas;
- Environmental restoration of mining area surfaces;
- 3D modeling: visibility analyses, volume measurements, relief images.

The course will consist of lectures, group-learning activities, computer exercises, field work and case study reports provided by the participants. The course will arrange some 20 didactic modules and visits to relevant sites.
