RESEARCH GRANTS

The BA has always been a vibrant center for scientific and intellectual debate. At present, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina is looking to revive its past historical scientific mission, to be recognized again by world scientists as one of the best global linkage venues to eminent researchers and scientific institutions.
The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) helps researchers and scientists get the best support needed to advance their work through international collaboration.

Brain Drain is one of the most serious problems facing the scientific community in Egypt. Professionals and scholars such as PhD holders, who obtained their degrees abroad face the following options:

  • Pursue their professional or academic careers abroad provided that they can secure funding for their research.
  • Return to their original Egyptian institutions where research funds are scarce and hence risk the loss of the knowledge they acquired.
  • Pursue a commercial career in Egypt while using their acquired knowledge professionally and in this case development is solely dependant on their own financing, or provided by corporations (multinationals) where they could end up working.

From the above, it is clear that:

  • There is a need to help in the development of the second category in order to nurture and benefit from their acquired knowledge during their research period abroad.
  • The CSSP recognizes the existence of a pool of untapped potential available in young researchers all over Egypt that are eager to collaborate with international institutions, however lacking the process needed for such collaboration.

Starting February 2004, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina has been offering annual research grants for young Egyptian postdoctoral researchers.
