Bibliotheca Alexandria and the Centre for Economic, Judicial, and Social Study and Documentation (CEDEJ) Celebrate 500,000 Press Articles Online

Alexandria, 20 April 2016 – The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) in collaboration with the Centre for Economic, Judicial, and Social Study and Documentation (CEDEJ) are honoured to announce reaching the milestone of 500,000 digitized press clips available online. The milestone marks more than half of CEDEJ’s archive, which comprises 800,000 articles taken from 24 daily and weekly Egyptian and Arab paper journals and 11 digital ones.

On this occasion, an event was held on Tuesday, 5 April , at the French Cultural Center in Cairo, where the documentary film Egyptian Snippets was shown. The film demonstrated the state-of-art technologies adopted at the BA, for efficiently digitizing the vast collection which forms a challenge in terms of text and material quality. Following the event, an exhibition about the Egyptian press clips was held during the period from the 6 to 13 April at Bayt al-Sinnari in Cairo.
Being a beacon of knowledge dissemination and preserving history, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) partnered with CEDEJ, who have catalogued and indexed their press collection in preparation for digital preservation and accessibility through the archive. The online archive is complimented with a powerful search engine supporting multidimensional searching and user-friendly navigation.

The Centre for Economic, Judicial, and Social Study and Documentation (CEDEJ) is a multiple specialization research center founded in 1968, located in Cairo. It is also affiliated with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), which runs under the auspices of the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

CEDEJ press archive dates back to 1976 rendering critical and important aspects of the Egyptian modern history.
