Biography:

Director of International Relations, Association of Science-Technology Centers 2006- Designed IGLO as the science center field’s first worldwide collaboration on a specific issue, in conjunction with the International Polar Year. Currently developing other strategic initiatives to position ASTC and its members as recognized leaders in public understanding of science, establishing international goals that address strategic objectives for ASTC and its members, and conceptualizing projects for international participation that focus on topics of interest to a worldwide audience. Establishing and nurturing international collaborations to build and strengthen organizational ties among ASTC, regional networks, and science centers around the world. PI for a NSF funded grant: Communicating Climate Change. (2008 – 2010). 2. Executive Director, Ecsite (European Network of Science Centres and Museums) 1995-2005: During tenure, created YESS (Yearly European Science and Society Day),in collaboration with the Network of European Foundations for Innovative Cooperation, organizing debates on brain research in eight European countries on May 8, the Day of Europe. Responsible for programming of ISCOM 2000-2003 (Improving Science Communication in Science Centers and Museums), initiated PENCIL project, an EU-funded program designed to bridge the gap between informal and formal science teaching (2004) and led Ecsite Directors Forums including topics related to informal learning (Athens, 2003) and Climate Change (Paris, 2004). 3. Secretary General, Focus Research: the Belgian Association for the Advancement of Science 1988-1995: Gained broad experience with research policy, careers in research, science communication, and interactive science exhibitions. Started innovative projects in these areas for Belgium. This led to an invitation to join the Ecsite board and later to serve Ecsite as Executive Director beginning in 1995. Synergistic Activities Member of International Programme Committee, Science Centre World Congresses (1995-present) Consulting services for international organizations and governments in ISE projects, including co-author (2005) for the UNESCO science department’s feasibility study for the creation of a science center in Tangier, Morocco; Member of the expert committee of the South African Agency for Research to evaluate and make recommendations for a new South Africa science communication policy (2004) Juror, European Union Descartes Prize for Science Communication (2004, 2005) Commissioned by the city of Gdansk, Poland to produce an international workshop for the creation of the local Hevlanium Science Center (2003) Member of the EU high level group on benchmarking science communication (2002) Delivered report for Brussels Region on art and science to support the introduction of science communication in the context of Brussels Cultural Capital of Europe (2000) Invited by the Portuguese Minister of Research to participate in a conference on science center networking in Macao. (1999) Frequent contributor, committee member, and panelist for a wide variety of science center and ISE programs.
