Intel Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair 2014

The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) in collaboration with Intel Egypt and the Ministry of Education (MoE) have organized Intel Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair 2014 (Intel BASEF 2014). The competition serves the Egyptian youth as it empowers students ages 14 -18 to conduct a research and present their projects findings under 17 science and humanities themes. To enhance the quality of projects and expand geographically, the PSC in collaboration with the MoE have covered 27 governorates this year.

Intel BASEF aims to prepare students, ages 14–18 from all over Egypt, to present their research projects to be evaluated by judges that are trained in line with the international standards. Projects have competed in the Local Fairs, where qualified project were eligible to compete in Intel BASEF. The first three winning projects in Intel BASEF will represent Egypt in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in the USA which is one of the premiere science competitions in the world since 1950.

The fair took place during March 16 – 18, where it ended by the closing ceremony on 18 March, where the winning projects were announced;

1st Grand Award: G-14 by Fares Essam & Abdelaziz Ahmed; a round shaped plane, a mix of heli and fixed wing planes. It can fly vertically and directly, and in narrow planes. It can perform missions like robots, and is hard do damage.

2nd Grand Award:Vacuum evaporator for water purification by Sara Ezat, Mona ElSayed and Hoda Mamdouh; depends on the idea of boiling water at room temperature, hence purify all the kinds of water.

3rd Grand Award: Employing Pyroelectric Technology to improve the efficiency of Solar Cells panels, by Abdallah Mohamed; evaluating the performance of photovoltaic cells by comparing two excellent high photothermal concentration composites.

The ceremony was attended by a number of eminent figures in the field of education and research; Dr. Yousry Elgamal, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Egypt Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), Ms Zeinab El Sadr Executive Director of the Research, Development and Innovation programme, and Dr. Mohsen Abdelaziz Sadek, Undersecretary of Ministry of Education for Information Technology Systems On behalf of Dr. Mahmoud Abouelnasr, Minister of Education. The event was also covered by the media, as there were a number of reporters and TV channels, like Cbc, On TV and channel 5.
