On 16 May 2013, in Phoenix, Arizona, the USA, the Special Award Organization winners of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2013 (Intel-ISEF 2013), held on 11-17 May 2013, were announced. Intel-ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition targeting students of 14-18 years of age. The Egyptian team participating in the Fair, encompassing six projects from different Egyptian Governorates, has won two of the Grand Awards for the first time.

The project “New Screening Method for Early Pediatric Cancer Detection through Automated Handwriting Analysis” has won the Fourth Award in the Computer Science category. The project was submitted by 3 Alexandrian students; Abdel-Rahman Mohamed Elsayed Abdel-Moneim, 17 years old, Hoda Sharawy Experimental Language School, Omar Khaled Obeya, 17 years old, Victory College, and Sara Samir Hagras, 18 years old, El-Raml Secondary School for Top Girls. Also, the project “Ships Rescue System”, submitted by Ahmed Atef Saber, 15 years old, Lycee la Liberte D'Alexandrie, has won the Fourth Award in the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering category.
It is worth mentioning that more that more than 1600 project from about 70 countries have participated in Intel-ISEF 2013 under different scientific categories such as Animal Sciences, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Energy and Transportation, Engineering: Electrical and Mechanical, Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Mathematical Sciences, Medicine & Health, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, and Plant Sciences.
Participation in Intel-ISEF 2013 comes as the final stage of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair (Intel-BASEF 2013), held during the period 9-11 March 2013. The competition targeting school students (14–18 years) is designed to increase their awareness of the importance of scientific research. The Bibliotheca Alexandria has provided academic and financial support to the participants in corporation with the Alexandria Shipyard, the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University, the Cancer Institute in Alexandria, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, and the Egypt-Japan University.
Intel-BASEF welcomes students with creative ideas in different fields of science and engineering. The program, organized by the Planetarium Science Center, aims at developing the skills of the participating students and trains them on how to conduct scientific research.
