"Nanotechnology, New Designs for Future Applications"; a lecture by Dr. Mona Bakr Mohamed

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) Planetarium Science Center hosted Dr. Mona Bakr Mohamed, National Institute of Laser Enhanced Science (NILES), Cairo University, who gave a lecture on Nanotechnology called "New Designs for Future Applications" on 29 October 2009. The lecture took place at the Great Hall, BA Conference Center.

Planetarium Official Inauguration after the Upgrading

On 18 October 2009, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Planetarium Science Center is witnessing the Planetarium Theater official inauguration after the upgrading. The soft opening has taken place in August 2009, where in addition to the classic IMAX projector; the Planetarium offers the public digital full-dome shows using the latest Digistar 3 system.

October 2009 marks the seventh anniversary of the inauguration of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), the New Library of Alexandria; a landmark building and an institution that marks a turning point in the cultural and academic arena of Alexandria and Egypt. It is the BA’s mission to be Egypt’s Window on the World and the World’s Window on Egypt. Within this ambitious goal, the BA endeavors to become a Center of Excellence for the Production and Dissemination of Knowledge of the twenty-first century. During the few years of its young age, the BA has branched and reached out to build bridges connecting West and East, North and South.


"From Earth to the Universe" Exhibition

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is organizing a series of activities to celebrate the IYA 2009 in Egypt, one of which is From Earth to the Universe Exhibition, at the ALEXploratorium, Planetarium Science Center (PSC), from 4 October to 11 November 2009, opened to the public from 10.00 am – 3.00 pm.


A Whole New World!

How amazing it is to be able to take a break from everyday life and step, for a little while, into a world of adventure and amusement. It is still our world though; yet, it cannot be seen this way anywhere else. It is the world as seen only from inside a full-dome planetarium theater. As of August 2009, thanks to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, the Planetarium now also operates a cutting-edge full-dome Digistar3 projection system with a rich set of real-time 3D astronomy features and a wide database of celestial bodies that enables the audience to explore the universe as never before.


The International Year of Astronomy (by Dr. Fatehi Saleh)

On the occasion of 400 years since Galileo invented the first manmade telescope that drastically changed the scientific perception of mankind to the universe, the UNESCO together with the International Astronomical Union- IAU have launched the year 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy- IYA 2009. Accordingly, events were organized and scheduled throughout the year on local, national, regional and international levels to celebrate the magnificent impact of Galileo’s work on the history of science as well as on the history of humanity.


Summer Program, It's Fun Time Again!

The school year is coming to an end, but not without leaving us unforgettable achievements. The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) is currently focusing on reinforcing its successes by emphasizing its annual activities. Very soon, the PSC will start its most anticipated annual event, the Summer Program. A combination of innovative hands-on, interactive, and pleasurable activities grouped according to age group, the Summer Program offers exciting packages tailored to give PSC young visitors a memorable vacation and a unique experience of fun learning.


Eratosthenes 2009

An annual event organized by the PSC in recognition of Eratosthenes, the Greek scientist of the Ancient Library of Alexandria, the festivity gives children of the 21st century the chance to conduct the 2000-year-old experiment developed by Eratosthenes to measure the Earth’s circumference.


World Environment Day (WED 2009)

For the second year, the PSC has celebrated the World Environment Day, under the auspices of the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs and the Ministry of Petroleum, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, with the aim to seize this opportunity to rally students to participate in the Environmental Creativity Celebration. The Event aimed at raising the students’ environmental awareness by encouraging them to direct their talents and skills in developing environmental artwork and inventions.
