Abstract:
For six months in 2007, a group of Dutch development organizations participated in an 'action learning' trajectory on 'the how and what of capacity strengthening'. Themes included: (1) capacity development in fragile states; (2) South–South co-operation; (3) clustering of partner organizations for the sake of capacity building and policy inputs; (4) diversity and partnership; (5) possible unintended negative consequences of capacity building for civil society; (6) the need for unveiling existing capacity instead of building new capacity; (7) issues of ownership in capacity development programmes; (8) measuring capacity building; (9) how to stimulate learning in the whole development chain; and (10) participatory monitoring & evaluation.
