Abstract: This report can be used both as a fundraising tool as well as a guide with valuable experiences and ideas for NGOs (considering) using land purchase as a tool for conservation. The first chapter describes the importance of land purchase as a tool for conservation, the IUCN NL and World Land Trust (WLT) partnership and the variety of ways in which corporate sponsors can become involved in this conservation strategy. Chapter two contains the proceedings of two symposia hosted by IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands and World Land Trust. The first symposium, “Land purchase: an intervention strategy for conservation” was organized in the Netherlands in September 2006. The second symposium, “Financial sustainability of private protected areas”, was organized in Belize in May 2008. Both sets of proceedings provide information about experiences, opportunities and pitfalls of using the purchase of land and management of private nature reserves as a conservation strategy. In 2008, special attention is given to various possibilities for achieving financial sustainability for the management of a protected area.
