Health and Environment in Sustainable Development

Five years
after the
Earth Summmit

The information used for this lecture is based on the WHO report entitled "Health and Environment in Sustainable Development: Five years after the Earth Summit" . The report is a contribution by WHO to the five-year follow-up to the Earth Summit. The lecture aims at providing:
  • a concept of sustainable development;
  • health-and-environment linkage;
  • a concept of driving forces and pressures that create the conditions in which environmental health threads can develop;
  • some examples of environmental health problems and solutions which will bring us closer to sustainable development.
The students should be able to understand the importance of this linkage and the significance of "upstream" damage from the major human-induced stresses to the environment, which subsequently affects human well-being.
