A classical example of a migrant study in diabetes is of Japanese who emigrated to the USA compared to those who remained in Japan. The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is two times higher among Japanese living in Hawaii as compared with those living in Hiroshima. This difference shows that environment is a major factor in the development of Type 2 Diabetes. What other characteristics do you think might differ in the two groups that might explain the different rates of diabetes?
