Although age-specific comparisons are meaningful, it is also desirable to compare overall mortality rates across population. Crude mortality rates are generally not comparable due to population differences in demographic characteristics that may influence that rate, as previously discussed. However, crude mortality rates can be standardized to reduce this distortion. This is also referred to as adjusting rates.
