Cases of rabies in humans in 1990-2002 in the US are rare with zero in Hawaii. Dog bites are of course the main source of infections. Curiously, although bats represent a minor fraction of the total reservoir of rabies in the US, since 1990 a total of 27 (93%) of the 29 human cases of rabies have been associated with insectavor bat rabies virus variants, e. g., with the silver-haired bat/eastern pipistrelle virus variant predominating.
