Tools such as those described here are important for both timeliness and transparency. Clearly specifying how each variable is measured and outlining each step in the process is critical for research continuity and for moving modules from one project to another.

The benefits of such tools are not limited to large multi-investigator research centres such as MCHP. Less complex concept dictionaries or project websites can be developed to assist with single projects or to represent the general work of a research unit.

Two other Canadian research centres, the Centre on Aging at the University of Victoria and the Population Health Research Unit at Dalhousie University, have developed their own Concept Dictionaries to suit their research purposes.
