Learning objectives

- Understand the concept of herd immunity.

- Understand the meaning of some commonly used parameters (basic and effective reproductive rate, average age at infection, critical proportion of vaccination).

- Understand why vaccination can lead to the eradication of infections.

- Understand why vaccination can, under certain circumstances, lead to an increase in disease burden in a population.

 

Performance goals

 

- Be able to describe what herd immunity is.

- Be able to discuss the relation between basic reproductive rate, effective reproductive rate, average age at infection, expectation of life and critical proportion of vaccination.

- Be able to describe the circumstances under which vaccination can lead to an increase in disease burden in a population.
