Despite the plethora of descriptive studies, recent attempts to quantify the impact of malaria in pregnancy have focused on the impact measured by randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (Gulmezoglu et al. 1998). These trials have included interventions using chemoprophylaxis, intermittent chemotherapy and bednets targeted at pregnant women.
