The next question about the nature of Type 2 Diabetes. The average patient admitted to UKPDS was 53 years old and on average these patients were followed for 10 years duration. During this time for a thousand of person years were followed up in another words 100 people being followed up for 10 years. 46 would develop one diabetes related endpoint which means around half of patients with Type 2 diabetes age 53 were developed diabetes endpoints during subsequent 10 years. For macrovascular disease it was 24.0 per 1000 patients years or 24% of risk. For microvascular disease was much lower risk at around 11.4 cases per 1000 patients years of follow up. This means that 53 years old patient have a twenty times more likely myocardial infarction than to develop renal failure during 10 years. The older diabetic patient more likely for macrovascular disease, but not for microvascular disease.
