The relationship between tobacco exposure and birth weight is not linear. Most of the reduction in birth weight occurs at low levels of exposure. Among women smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day, the effects of smoking on birth weight did not seem to vary with increasing exposure.

This may have important implications for women trying to reduce their exposure. Women smoking more than 10 cigarettes per day may need to reduce to relatively low levels before improvements in birth weight are seen.
