Among the favorite therapeutic regiments used strenuously at that time were the following:  a wide variety of emetic drugs which produced vomiting, and cathartic or purgative mixtures which acted as powerful laxatives.  These potential dangerous, and even lethal, drugs were given in large doses over long time periods.
