Women’s Health Initiative (UC Irvine Clinical Center)

Observational study and clinical trial enrolling a total of approximately 160,000 postmenopausal women aged 50-79 nationwide (approximately 3,600 at UC Irvine) to examine risk factors for coronary artery disease, cancer, and other diseases, and the efficacy of estrogen replacement therapy, low-fat dietary counseling, and calcium/vitamin D therapy on reducing the risk of certain diseases.

Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) CT Reading Center

Longitudinal investigation of 6,500 high-risk men and women among multiple field centers, examining relation of risk factors and subclinical disease measures, including EBCT coronary calcium, with the occurrence of clinical cardiovascular disease. The EBCT reading center will conduct standardized interpretation of EBCT scans done in study participants and report results to the coordinating center.

Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Echocardiography Reading Center

Longitudinal investigation of approximately 5,000 young adults at multiple US field centers, examining the development and progression of cardiovascular risk factors and relation to subclinical cardiovascular disease. The Echocardiography Reading Center has conducted readings of echocardiograms done in Years 5 and 10, with the current contract exclusively involving analysis of echocardiography data as it relates to major CARDIA hypotheses and other risk factors and measures of subclinical disease.
