When transfusion is required, the use of paid or professional donors without screening for HIV is very risky; the use of family members as blood donors is safe only if those family members do not have HIV or other blood-borne infections. Screening the blood supply is ultimately the most important step to eliminating HIV infection, as well as other infections through transfusion.
