An example for this non-causal association, is cigarette smoking which is found to be associated with educational level, occupational status and social level. But only smoking is truly causal of lung cancer. The associations with smoking will be detected with an etiologic study of lung cancer, but are interrelated with smoking rather than a cause of cancer.
