Presentation Abstract:

Scribes and compositors: the impact of printing on early modern Armenian letters: This paper will explore the impact of printing on Armenian letters as an index of cultural and literary trends and patterns in the early modern period. It will highlight issues such as the reasons behind the relatively limited impact of printing; the perceptions and purposes of the pioneers of Armenian printing and their understanding of J. Gutenberg’s invention as a means of disseminating knowledge; the cultivation of an Armenian readership; and the continuing appeal of manuscript copying in Armenian realities. Comparative parallels will be drawn between Arabic, Armenian and Greek experiences in early printing.
