Libraries throughout the world provide citizens with public access to networked information. With the adopting of emerging technologies, libraries seek to facilitate information retrieval more thoroughly, effectively and attractively. With information services, societies have a ready tool to further the Information Society and achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals. Upgrading this information commons to the Information Society level will enable all people to seek and impart information.

The WSIS pre-conference Libraries – the Information Society in Action will present some of the best practices from libraries around the world in the areas of health, education and training, media literacy, preserving of cultural heritage and disaster preparedness.
