Dr. Alex Byrne, President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA); University Librarian and a Deputy Chair of the Academic Board at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia

Dr Alex Byrne is the President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA - www.ifla.org ) from August 2005 to August 2007.  Alex chaired IFLA's Committee on Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression 1997-2003.  He has led the development of a number of IFLA statements and declarations, including the IFLA Internet Manifesto, the Glasgow Declaration on Libraries, Information Services and Intellectual Freedom and the IFLA Statement on Open Access to Scholarly Literature and Research Documentation.  

In his normal professional life at the University of Technology , Sydney , he also chairs the Emerging Fields Advisory Committee. It scopes potential disciplinary areas for the University.  
UTS Library is recognised to be one of the leaders in the development of digital libraries in Australia . The Library launched a digital press, UTSePress, in January 2004.

Mrs. Alia Mohammad Bakir, Director of the Central Library of Basra , Iraq

Before her present position, Ms. Alia worked as librarian in the Central Library of Basra. She has bachelor's degree of the Libraries Department of the Al Mustansarya University, Iraq. She is interested in developing the library and its effect of service in Iraq after the war, as well as in cultural heritage and its effect in building national memory of new generation.

A children's book has been published about the work of Mrs. Alia during the war: “ The Librarian of Basra . A true story from Iraq ”, written by Jeanette Winter and published by Harcourt in 2005.

Ms. Hao Jiying, Assistant of Planning and Coordination Section, Medical Library of the Chinese PLA, Beijing , China

She got the Bachelor's degree after five-year study in Medical Information Department in Hu Nan Medical University in 1995. In 2001 she got the Master's degree in information sciences study in Academy of Military Medical Sciences . After graduating from the university, she is working in the Medical Library of the Chinese PLA. Now she works as an assistant of Planning and Coordination Section in the library. She took charge of the research of two scientific tasks that are Collection Development of MLPAL and Research on the Theory and Practice of Biomedical Information Resources on the Internet respectively.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria , Egypt

Serageldin is Director of the Library of Alexandria, chairs the BoD of the BA's seven affiliated research institutes and three museums. He is Distinguished Professor, Wageningen University , Netherlands . He serves as Chair and Member of a number of advisory committees for academic, research, scientific and international institutions and civil society efforts. Memberships include the Institut d'Egypte, TWAS, the Indian National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is Founder and former Chairman, Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest, the Global Water Partnership and former Chairman, Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Serageldin was Vice-President of the World Bank (1993-2000). He has published over 50 books and monographs and over 200 papers on a variety of topics including biotechnology, rural development, sustainability, and the value of science to society. He holds a B.Sc. in engineering from Cairo University and Masters' degree and a PhD from Harvard University and has received 18 honorary doctorates.

Ms. Jill Cousins, Head of Office, The European Library, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the National Library of the Netherlands

Jill Cousins has many years experience in web publishing, which are now being applied to the library side of the fence with the launch of The European Library ( www.theeuropeanlibrary.org ) in March 2005. Jill has transferred the lessons learnt as the European Business Development Director of VNU New Media to scholarly publishing, looking after the online journals of Blackwell Publishing. Prior to publishing, Jill worked as Marketing and Event Director for Learned Information, running Online Information in London , extending Internet World throughout Europe and creating Knowledge Management. Her experience of libraries is partly as a user, but also as a provider of information to businesses and industries having run her own research company, First Contact, prior to selling it to Disclosure Ltd in the early 90's. All of which is very deviant from her first career as a Middle Eastern Map Researcher for the Ministry of Defence.

Ms. Kay Raseroka, Director of Library Services at the University of Botswana , Immediate past President of IFLA

Kay Raseroka was born in Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa . She is a citizen of Botswana , is married and has children. She has been in librarianship for over two decades during which she made tremendous contributions to the profession. In 2003-2005, she was the President of IFLA, having “Lifelong Literacy” as her presidential theme.

She has served IFLA in many different capacities, e.g. in the Standing Committee of the Section of University Libraries and other General Research Libraries and in the Standing Committee of the Section of Regional Activities – Africa. She has chaired the IFLA Membership Development Committee and been a Member in the IFLA Publications Committee

Dr. Maja Ž umer, Associated Professor of Library and Information Science at University of Ljubljana , Slovenia

Maja Žumer holds a Ph.D. in information science from University of Zagreb ( Croatia ), M.L.S. from Kent State University and B.S. in mathematics from University of Ljubljana ( Slovenia ). Before she became a faculty member of LIS at University of Ljubljana , she was a systems librarian and later head of Research and Development Department at the National and University Library in Ljubljana . Her research interests include design and evaluation of information retrieval systems, end-user interfaces, and, recently, FRBR model, particularly implementation aspects. She has led national level large projects with international funding such as retrospective conversion of catalogues of Slovenian national library. Her scholarly publications include over 20 papers, five invited conference papers and many international conference presentations.

Maja serves as a member of Standing committee of Bibliography section of International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). She is a member of several IFLA working groups, and chaires the Working Group of Guidelines for electronic national bibliographies.

Ms. María Luisa de la Maza , Engineer, Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums of Chile (DIBAM), Santiago, Chile

Maria Luisa de la Maza has been the National Coordinator of the BiblioRedes Project for the last three years. She is an Industrial Engineer and has an MBA at ESADE in Barcelona , Spain . For the last ten years she has lead important projects in the fields of health and libraries.

Dr. Marian Koren, Head of Research and International Affairs for the Netherlands Public Library Association, The Hague , Netherlands

Marian Koren is involved with a network of Dutch and international researchers, develops library research and organizes various programs for continuing library education. She has developed a number of innovative concepts for library services, including health information, Europe information and youth Information Points. Marian Koren' s doctoral thesis, “Tell Me! The Right of the Child to Information,” relates to human rights, especially human rights of children and the right to information, with its implications for libraries. She is the author of a large number of articles in library and other (international) journals on a variety of issues. Marian Koren has also presented lectures and seminars internationally for library and educational audiences on topics ranging in large scale.

She received her Ph.D. cum laude from the University of Amsterdam . She studied Dutch and international law; and studied Swedish with a focus on children's literature and culture.

She is member (2001-2005) of the Professional Committee and Governing Board of the International Library Association, IFLA.

Ms. Marcia Rosetto, President, FEBAB (Brazilian Federation of Librarians Associations Information Scientits and Institutions), Sao Paulo, Brazil

Marcia Rosetto works as adviser to the Reading Program of the State Library System of the São Paulo State since 2004. Earlier she was the Technical Director of Automation Service of the Integrated Library System in the University of São Paulo . Marcia is the author of several papers published in congresses and journals.

Since 1975 she has held several positions in the Librarians Association of São Paulo (APB) and FEBAB, as well as in organization of national and regional congresses, courses, seminars, book fairs and talks in the field of librarianship.

Marcia is a member of the Standing Committee of the IFLA Latin America and the Caribbean Section."

Dr. Noha Adly , ICT and ISIS Director, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria , Egypt

Dr. Noha Adly is Associate Professor of Computers and Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University . In 1995 she obtained her Ph.D. in Computer Science, Cambridge University , UK . During 1995-2000, she was Research Associate then Visiting Researcher at AT&T Cambridge Research Laboratory.

Dr. Adly has been a Consultant to several firms, including the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), where she directed the design and installation of its network and information system and the design and implementation of the library information system. She is currently Director of the Information and Communication Technology Department and the International School of Information Science of BA.

Dr. Adly is a member of ACM and the IEEE Computer Society as well as several other scientific, social and humanitarian organizations. Her research interests include distributed systems, database systems and digital libraries. She is author/co-author of over 25 publications in the field of computer science and engineering.

Dr. Peter Lor, Secretary General of IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions), The Hague , Netherlands

Before his present job in IFLA, Peter Lor held the post of Professor Extraordinary at the Department of Information Science, University of Pretoria , South Africa .

Born in the Netherlands , Peter emigrated to South Africa . He studied at the universities of Stellenbosch and Pretoria , and Caen in France . He had several leading positions in South African university libraries and the State Library, and then became the National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of South Africa. He also was Professor in the University of South Africa 's Department of Library and Information Science. In addition, he has served on the boards of directors of a number of non-profit foundations.

Peter Lor has been a very active contributor to IFLA. He chaired the Conference of Directors of National Libraries from 1996 to 2000 and has served as a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Council on Library and Information Resources, Washington DC . From 1996 to 1998 he was vice-chairperson of the Standing Conference of African National and University Libraries in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa .

Peter Lor was actively involved in developing policy for library and information services for post-apartheid South Africa and played a leading role in the formation of the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), a new, inclusive organisation that replaced the former separate associations. He regards this as one of his biggest and most satisfying professional achievements.

Dr. Sohair F. Wastawy, Chief Librarian, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria , Egypt

Dr. Wastawy received her BA, MA, and completed work towards her Ph.D. thesis in Linguistics at Cairo University , Egypt .  She possesses a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from The Catholic University of America, Washington DC, USA and a Doctorate degree in Library and Information Management from Simmons College , Massachusetts , USA . 

Dr. Wastawy has been a practitioner in the information field since 1975 and practiced librarianship in a number of countries that include Egypt , Saudi Arabia , and the USA . She began her library career at Cairo University Library, taught librarianship in the first women's library program in Saudi Arabia and was the Dean of Libraries at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago from 1988 until 2004. Dr. Wastawy was recently appointed as the first Chief Librarian for the new Library of Alexandria, Alexandria , Egypt . The new Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a vast cultural complex rising from the shores of the Mediterranean and only a stone's throw from the location of the ancient library of Alexandria, is a new Egyptian enterprise of international scope and ambition.

In addition to her leadership role and managerial responsibilities, Dr. Wastawy is often a consultant to the non-for-profit organizations, corporations, and accreditation commissions.

Dr. Wastawy is an expert in library management in academic and research institutions. Her most recent publication “Learning Communities: An investigative Study into their Impact on Library Services” was published in Science and Technology Libraries , Vol. 24, No. 3/4, 2004.

Dr. Wastawy has been the recipient of many excellence awards, a Peace Fellowship and a Fulbright Scholarship.

Ms. Tuula Haavisto, Senior Library Adviser, Helsinki , Finland

Tuula Haavisto is a free lancer librarian, running her own enterprise Tuula Haavisto Library Knowledge T:mi . She works with international and domestic projects, organises conferences, gives lectures in library education and training and produces and translates texts. Her present main project is coordinating the WSIS actions of IFLA. Library policy and information society policy are the common focus of her multitude professional activities and interests.

Before her free lancer career, she worked 1987-1997 as Secretary General of the Finnish Library Association. Earlier she worked for several research and special libraries, often in development projects. By education Tuula is librarian and Master of Social Sciences from Tampere University , Finland .

After having served IFLA in many capacities, she is since 2004 a member in the IFLA FAIFE Committee (Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression). She is the Chair of the Board of the KVS Institute, Kansanvalistusseura (the eldest adult education organization in Finland ) and Vice Chair of Lukukeskus, Finnish Centre for Reading .

Dr. Sueli Angelica do Amaral has a master’s degree and a doctorate in Information Science.
Since 1993 she is working as a professor at Information Science and Documentation Department of University of Brasilia where she was Post-Graduation Coordinator of Information Science Program at University of Brasília from 2000 until 2004.

Earlier she has been the head librarian of Administration Section of the Library of Federal Senate of Brazil, librarian of Company of Mineral Resources Research, and librarian of Regional Library of Rio Comprido, both in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

She has published books about marketing in libraries and several articles in national and international journals. Now she is a correspondening member of the Standing Committee of the Section on Latin America and the Caribbean of IFLA. 1997-2005 she was its’ Member.

Mr. Arthur Smith has degrees in Russian language and chemistry.

He has aMasters in Library and Information Science from the University of NorthCarolina. He has worked in a variety of information research andmanagement positions in the Middle East, Europe and the Far East. Mr.Smith is currently Director of Operations for OCLC in the Middle Eastand India.

Ms. Mirja Ryynänen, Vice Chairperson of the Finnish Committee for Development Policy, Maaninka, Finland

Ms. Ryynänen was over 20 years a Member of the Finnish Parliament and in 1995- 2002 a Member of the European Parliament. In both these positions Ms. Ryynänen worked actively for libraries, and still does. She has worked also a lot with e.g. democracy projects in developing countries. 1991-96 she was the President of the Finnish Library Association. By education Ms. Ryynänen is a language teacher.

 

Mr. Francis T. Kirkwood, reference librarian, Library of Parliament, Ottawa, Canada

Francis Kirkwood is a polyglot whose first professional job was at the age of 38 as an international subject annotator at the National Library of Canada’s multilingual service. He has been a parliamentary reference librarian and occasional researcher in Ottawa since 1989, specializing in history, comparative religion and law. Frank was chair of the IFLA Government Information and Official Publications Section (1995-1999), and he has organized and led two IFLA GIOPS Seminars for Librarians of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, first on Government Information for the People (Moscow 1999) and then on Government Information and Democracy (Crimea 2003). He is currently a member of the IFLA Standing Committee on Reference and Information Services and of the IFLA Committee on Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE).

 

Ms. Helena R Asamoah– Hassan, University Librarian, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana

Helena Asamoah-Hassan has been in the library profession for 28 years, 5 years at the top management level. She is the Ghana Country Coordinator for two programs – the Electronic Information for Libraries Network (eIFL.net) 2003 to date and the Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERI) of INASP 2003 to date. She is the Chairperson of the IFLA Africa Section Standing Committee, 2005 to date and also the President of the Ghana Library Association 2003 to date. In addition, she is the Chairperson of the Management Committee / Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH) March 2004 to date, and a Commissioner of the National Media Commission of Ghana, 2003 to date.

Ms. Asamoah-Hassan has 19 publications, 16 major reports, 20 library related conference papers and 11 other conference papers.

Dr. Claudia Lux, Director General, Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin; President-Elect, IFLA

Claudia Lux is the current President Elect of IFLA and will be the President of IFLA 2007 - 2009. She is the Co-Chair of IFLA-IPA, a small working group of librarians and publishers about common problems in their professional field. She has been active in different committees and groups in IFLA and is the current chair of the German Library Association.

She has a diploma in Social Sciences and a PH D in Chinese Studies and a degree as science librarian. Before she came into her actuall position as Director General of the Central and Regional Library Berlin, Germany, she was director of the Senate Library in Berlin,and librarian in the East-Asian department of th State Library in Berlin.

Mr. Sjoerd Koopman, IFLA's Coordinator of Professional Activities

Sjoerd Koopman is IFLA's Coordinator of Professional Activities. He is a Dutch national, was trained as a (research) librarian and has been working in the library profession for nearly 30 years. After a job at a Faculty Library of the University of Amsterdam (1976-1979), he held several positions at the Royal Library, the national library of the Netherlands (1979-1991), followed by a career at the Pica Library Automation organisation (1991-1998). Since 1998 heworks at IFLA Headquarters, as the Secretary of the Professional Committee, liaising with IFLA's Divisions and Sections and with UNESCO and other organisations withing the library and information profession.
