Prof Chengcai Chu

   Biography
 
Chengcai Chu, Professor in Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). In 1986, graduated from Department of Biology, Anhui Normal University. In 1989, earned Master Degree in Institute of Botany, CAS. From 1993-1996 as PhD student worked in Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK), Germany. In 1996, got Ph.D. in Martin-Luther University, Germany. 1997-1998 as postdoctoral fellowship worked in Prof. Dr. Uwe Sonnewald’s Lab of IPK, Germany. He joined in Institute of Genetics in 1999, and received the CAS Young Talented Award in 1999. The work of laboratory mainly focuses on the gene regulation, manipulation of metabolism pathways, and functional genomics studies by using rice as model system, and molecular breeding via modern biotechnology.
 
 
  Abstract
 
Agrobiotechnology ------ the Driving Force for the Next Green Revolution

In China, Agrobiotechnology is viewed as strategic elements for increasing productivity and securing national food supply. In this presentation, I will cover following issues: the challenge of sustainable agriculture in China; Agrobiotechnology R&D and its current status; biosafety concerns and measurements; GMOs and their impacts on China economics; Prospects of Agrobiotechnology in China, and will give some concluding remarks.
