The BA Alexandria Project organizes an open lecture entitled “Medicine between Science and Art in Ancient Alexandria”, delivered by Professor Abeer Kassem, Head of the Greco-Roman Archaeology Department, Faculty of Arts, Damanhour University.

The lecture gives an overview of medicine in Greek cultural heritage in the era that preceded the establishment of Alexandria, as well as its importance and development through the Alexandria School of Medicine during the Hellenistic period. This overview serves as an introduction to a presentation on the depiction of the medicinal scenes in Greek Art, while explaining the medical tools, specialties, and treatments used at that time, as reflected by archaeological evidence. Moreover, the lecture presents examples of these medicinal scenes, as represented in different ancient Greek arts and how they are related to the daily life and religious beliefs that were prevalent in ancient times.
