Abstract: This working paper looks at the development and socialisation of children under 5 years of age in two Caribbean countries, Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica. It involved fieldwork in four very different communities as well as extensive discussion with academics and professionals. It looks at issues including poverty, cultural change, parenthood, community support, education and children's rights.
Note: This paper is a summary of a much fuller document by the author, Childhoods and family culture: Growing up outside, shifted or left behind?, to be published by Ian Randle Publishers, Jamaica, in 2008.
