Abstract: Following an investigation into the Palestinian community in the Netherlands, on behalf of United Civilians for Peace in 2005, the consultancy firm Alternative View explored four other Arab communities in the Netherlands: the Tunisian, Egyptian, Lebanese and Syrian. The aim of this project was to gain insight into the backgrounds of these communities and their commitment to democratization and development in the Arab countries of origin. Together with the different communities the conference 'Democratization and Development in the Arab World: how can the Diaspora contribute?' was organized on March 18, 2007. During this conference, the Arab communities discussed their possible role in the democratization process in the Middle East and North Africa. This document contains a summary of the discussions and the profiles of the five Arab communities.
