Regional Workshop on Science Diplomacy for the Arab Region

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) through the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries’ Arab Regional Partner (TWAS–AREP) are seeking candidates to participate in the Regional Workshop on Science Diplomacy for the Arab Region that will be held hybrid  from 24–26 October 2023.

Science diplomacy is the use of scientific collaborations among nations to address common problems facing humanity and to build constructive, knowledge based international partnerships.

Many of the challenges we face today are international and whether it is tackling climate change or fighting disease, these global problems require global solutions. That is why it is important that we create a new role for science in international policymaking and diplomacy to place science at the heart of the progressive international agenda.

Science diplomacy needs support and encouragement at all levels of the science community. Younger scientists need opportunities and career incentives to engage with policy debates from the earliest stage of their careers. There is much to learn from related debates over science communication and public engagement by scientists, where there has been a culture change within science over the past ten years.

TWAS-AREP Young Scientists Training Program “Biodiversity towards Sustainable Food Systems in the Arab Region” online workshop

 Within the framework of the Young Scientists Training Program, held to provide young scientists with needed skills to advance their career and achieve their professional goals, TWAS-AREP organizes an online workshop with the theme “Biodiversity Towards Sustainable Food Systems in the Arab Region” on 13-14 December 2022.

The workshop will address Biodiversity and Agro-Food Systems, with special emphasis on their inter-correlation with the climate change. It will discuss the Agro-Foods nexus in depth, biodiversity challenges facing Arab countries specially as a consequence of climate change. The workshop will also discuss the importance of education for sustainable development, and the regional challenges faced in this regard by the developing countries, and how the developing countries can deploy the education and research efforts to attain the sustainable development goals.

The workshop will give young researchers under the age of 40 the opportunity to network with experts and researchers from developing counties.

Eligibility Criteria:

•Applicant aged 40 or less.
•Master/PhD students and PhD holder in one of life and natural sciences fields.
•Living/working in developing countries.
•Refugees and displaced scientists living in any country are highly encouraged to apply.

The workshop is free of charge.

Online lecture titled "Education for Sustainable Development"

 The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) affiliated to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Academic Research Sector, in cooperation with the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries’ Arab Regional Partner (TWAS-AREP), organized an online lecture titled “Education for Sustainable Development” on Wednesday, 2 November 2022, 12:00 pm (Cairo Time).

The Lecture was presented by Prof. Saouma Boujaoude, Interim Dean, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, American University of Beirut.

The Lecture discussed the challenges and opportunities of sustainable education in the Arab region.

Sustainable education in the Arab region is facing a growing challenge owing to a combination of factors that require urgent solutions. There is a significant population bulge in the region among the under-25 age group, a shortage of quality education for young people to access, and limited opportunities for economic empowerment after they graduate. Not surprisingly, a very small minority of Arab students who go outside the region to improve their educational prospects return after they graduate. At the same time, improvement in the quality of pre-college education has been stagnant and higher education is becoming increasingly unaffordable for most people thus worsening social cohesion and increasing economic disparity. Within this context, this presentation will explicate the sources of the challenges and provide approaches that have the potential to alleviate the challenges and increase opportunities for improved access and quality education highlighting the role of evidence-based decisions in the process.

TWAS-AREP Young Scientists Training Program: "Climate Change: Lens on Priorities" Workshop

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), in collaboration with The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries' Arab Regional Partner (TWAS-AREP), organizes an online workshop on Climate Change within the framework of the Young Scientists Training Program on 7–8 December 2021 within the framework of TWAS-AREP Young Scientists Training Program. 

The workshop aims at highlighting climate change priority issues, research priorities, and climate change related risks and concerns for developing countries with particular focus on the Arab region. Also, the workshop will present practical experiences from different developing regions on tackling climate change and the role of research in these regards.

The workshop will give the opportunity for young researchers under the age of 40 to network with experts and researchers from developing counties.

Green Economy: Concept and Practices

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) affiliated to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's Academic Research Sector, and the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries Arab Regional Partner (TWAS-AREP) are hosting a webinar entitled Green Economy: Concept and Practices on Monday, 15th November 2021 at 1:00 pm (Cairo time).

The webinar aims at discussing green economy in relation to sustainable development by exploring: the concept of green economy; why green economy matters; Green Economy public benefits, especially for the developing countries; who the key players in making green economy are; green economy and environmental sustainability; the role of the academia in supporting Green Economy, with special emphasis on what role young scientists can play in this regards and finally, sharing best practices in applying green economy concept.

The webinar will be presented by Prof. Mohamed Abdrabo, Professor of Environmental Economics and head of the Alexandria Research Center for Adaptation to Climate Change (ARCA), Alexandria University; and Dr. Hussein Abaza, Green Economy Expert, Senior Advisor to the Egyptian Minister of Environment, Director of the Association for Environmental and Community Development (ACED), the Center for Sustainable Development Solutions (CSDS).

Young Scientists Training Program Research Ethics Essentials: Conduct Your Research Responsibly

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) in collaboration with The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries Arab Regional Partner (TWAS-AREP) is organizing Research Ethics Essentials: Conduct Your Research Responsibly workshop within the framework of the Young Scientists Training Program. The training will be held on 18-20 December 2018 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The workshop aims at providing a comprehensive approach on how to conduct the research responsibly. Over the workshop days, the participants will get to learn in an interactive sessions the main issues facing researchers while conducting their research, to enable them produce quality responsible research that matches the international standards.

TWAS/BioVisionAlexandria.NXT 2018

TWAS/BVA.NXT 2018 was the fifth BioVisionAlexandira.NXT organized in Alexandria. The event was held 18–19 April 2018 under the theme “Science Diplomacy: Voices of the South”. It explored the importance of science diplomacy to the young scientists in the developing world. 

TWAS/BVA.NXT 2018 participants were offered the opportunity to meet policy makers, experts, academics and young promising scientists from the South to provide them with the needed skills to build their own capacities and help them in the advancement of their developing countries. They got the opportunity to meet policy makers and diplomats from around the world to discuss the possible ways of cross-border collaborations and partnerships to improve science and relationships between nations.

Roundtable on Responsible Science

The Arab Regional Office of The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS-ARO) in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Center for Special Studies and Programs organized Roundtable on Responsible Science, on 28th-29th November 2017 at Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

This event aimed at bringing together eminent scientists, policy makers along with young Arab scientists to discuss pressing topics related to responsible scientific research and how to develop mechanisms to ensure integrity in the research process. The Roundtable also presented to Arab scientists the importance of conducting ethical research that follows the international standards through having in depth discussions and group work.

Our target was to maximize the benefits for young scientist by allowing them to be engaged in an interactive environment and addressing some serious concerns that affect the entire scientific community.

TWAS-ARO Young Scientists Training Program: Ethics in Life Sciences Research and Publications

In continuation of its role in promoting scientific excellence and building young researchers' capacities in the region, the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) in collaboration with The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries' Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) organized the "Ethics in Life Sciences Research and Publications' workshop.

The workshop was held within the framework of the Young Scientists Training Program on 26-27 November 2017 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The training aimed at enhancing the researchers' awareness on the ethics to be considered in conducting Life Sciences Research, with particular focus on publication ethics, authorship, and authorship conflicts.

Cancer Awareness Seminar: New Trends in Cancer Research

Within the framework of Health Education Club, the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) and the TWAS-ARO organized the Cancer Awareness Seminar entitled "New Trends in Cancer Research" , on Monday, 30 October 2017 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The Seminar aimed at raising the public awareness of cancer, and encouraging its early detection and prevention. During this one-day Seminar, we discussed different types of cancer that are of high incidence and prevalence in Egypt and Arab countries, how to face it and reduce the disease's stigma by educating people about its symptoms and treatment options. The Seminar highlighted the new trends in research.
