Dr. Sawsan Al Ateek

Biography:

Currently, Assistant professor in Genetics, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. Teaching various courses in genetics and bioethics for under-and postgraduate students using active teaching techniques. Also, Supervisor and Mentor for MSc and Ph.D. students in different aspect of genetics. I have been awarded my PhD. from The Ohio State University (OSU), College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences, Department of Plant Pathology (PhD Egyptian Government Mission, Full Scholarship 2006?2010). While there, gained experience in different ways to interact with international students. while proceeding with postdoctoral fellowship at OSU, I had the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students from OSU and College of Wooster and learned from them and increased my desire to make a difference in student?s life. Recently, I attended and organized multiple Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Institutes and workshops funded by National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and American Society of Microbiology which polished my thoughts and enhanced my ideas to serve the students and colleagues in a more promoting way. Furthermore, I have gained a broad background in using active teaching which can help stimulate the student?s imagination, creativity and productivity. I am also a member in Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture and American Society of Microbiology. My main focus in research was on biocontrol, but it took another turn when
I arrived in Egypt. The picture became clearer and I steered toward applying what I have learned abroad on my interest in microbial genetics. Currently,
I am focusing on metagenomic and phylogenetic analysis of diverse microbial communities in Egyptian soil and water in order to create a safer environment for human health.
Trying to mentor students, conduct research and help facilitate a rich environment for beginner scientists to thrive within our culture is considered a big challenge, but is approachable.
