Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt. The CSSP will help researchers and scientists to get the best support needed to advance their work through international collaborations.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), participated in The World Life Sciences Forum BioVision 2005, 11-15 April 2005, Lyon, France. Dr. Serageldin chaired the Ministers Plenary Session, entitled Agriculture and Innovation on Thursday, 14 April. He headed a delegation from the Bibliotheca Alexandrina including Dr. Mohamed El-Faham, Director, Center for Special Studies and Programs; and Dr. Rafik Nakhla, Head, Personnel Department at the BA .

The World Life Sciences Forum BioVision brings together the top decision-makers and stakeholders; policy-makers, members of government, ethicists, researchers, consumer representatives, patients associations, NGOs and media, with the aim of fostering open debate and exchange between Science, Society at large and Industry concerning vital Life Sciences issues facing our world today.

The 2005 Forum included discussions on Women, Health and Science; Brain Research and New Technologies; BioIndustry and Environment; and Agriculture and Nutrition. It included a Nobel Laureates’ Day on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the polio vaccine.
The nine themes of the Parallel Conferences formed the core of BioVision 2005, and focused on Health, Agriculture and the Environment.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosted the BioVisionAlexandria Conference, 3-6 April 2004, where Healthcare and the Poor, Agriculture and Safe Food Sufficiency, Exploiting Biodiversity and Protecting the Environment, as well as Trade, Patents and Developing Countries were explored. BioVisionAlexandria, held at the BA, will be convened every even year, therefore alternating with The World Life Sciences Forum BioVision, held every odd year in Lyon, France. It will focus on Life Sciences and Sustainable Development, giving priority to concrete actions between the South and the North.

EAGLES Panel Discussion - a BioVision 2005 Associated Program
European Action on Global Life Sciences (EAGLES) is an association of scientists and opinion leaders from Europe and Developing and Emerging Countries and is supported by the European Federation of Biotechnology.
A panel discussion and networking reception were held on Monday, April 11 as a Biovision 2005 Associated program.
EAGLES panel was chaired by Dr. Ismail Serageldin and addressed the issue of global responsibility and discussed how best to support and answer the needs of the DECs.

BioVision.Nxt 2005
The "BioVision.Nxt 2005" event took place within the context of the World Life Sciences Forum in Lyon 2005 (April 11-15, 2005), and brought together 100 of the most promising PhDs, Post-docs and MBAs from leading universities and research institutes around the world to further integrate the concerns and expectations of the younger generation of PhDs and Post Docs.

Consequently, and with the support of the European Commission, the BioVision.Nxt initiative was launched, with the goal of furthering the careers and networking of the most promising talents in Life Sciences worldwide.

The selection process, ensuring that the “Class of 2005” was as diverse as possible in terms of ethnicity and institution, and was conducted by top officials from a range of prestigious institutions, including the New York Academy of Sciences, the European Federation of Biotechnology, the European Molecular Biology Organisation, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, private consultants, and other international partners.

Egypt was represented by twelve candidates representing the biotech related sciences.

The conference registration fees and accommodation were totally covered by BioVision and the travel expenses of eight of the Egyptian representatives were funded by the BA.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, a special guest in the " Promoting Life Sciences in Developing Countries " Debate Dinner
The debate dinner titled " Promoting Life Sciences in Developing Countries: At Long Last, a Common Agenda between North and South?" and held on Wednesday, April 13, discussed the enormous challenges faced by developing countries and proposed solutions which will satisfy countries of the North and the South regarding the huge difference in the levels of development and basic requirements between developing countries which results in the need to correct myths underlying common stereotypes.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin meets the Egyptian BioVision.Nxt:
Lyon, Thursday, April 14- Dr. Ismail Serageldin held a meeting with the Egyptian BioVision.Nxt 2005 representatives at the Lyon Congress Center.
He discussed with them the initiative of sponsoring young scientists to attend such an important event and how they could benefit from the outrange exposure to the sectors of biotechnology (science- society – Industry) in the whole world.

Ministers Plenary Session: Agriculture and Innovation
Lyon, Thursday, April 14 - The ministers plenary session on agriculture and innovation was chaired by Dr. Ismail Serageldin and addressed issues and conflicts involved in the "Green Revolution" and delivering global food security.
